Grammy-winning Nigerian singer, Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has opened up about how being an artist changed her.
The 31-year-old explained that before she became a professional musician, she was “hyper-indepent” and tended to push people away, but making music has taught her to be open and vulnerable without feeling odd.

Speaking in a recent interview with Doose Of Society, Tems said, ”

Tems: “Being an artist has changed my life. There are a lot of people that know me. It made me grow, I had to shed a lot of habits that were holding me back—one of those things was my hyper-independency and the thing I do where I push people away.”

She added, ‘I have now learned to embrace love and just be open, and be free to give love and be vulnerable without feeling odd.”
Tems launched her music career in 2018 with her debut single, ‘Mr Rabel’, after quitting her job.

However, her breakthrough came after she enchanted the Western music audience with her 2020 collaborative hit with Wizkid, ‘Essence.’

Since then she has collaborated with Drake, Beyoncé, Justin Bieber, and J.Cole, and also won two Grammys.

She recently set a record as the first Nigerian artist to hit over 40 million monthly streams on Spotify.

Nigerian musician, Innocent Idibia, also known as 2Baba, has named Burna Boy the top Afrobeat artiste on the global stage.

2Baba gave the verdict amid the controversy surrounding the “Top 3” artiste in the Nigeria music industry.

DAILY POST reports that the popular ‘Big 3’ term is used to refer to  Wizkid, Burna Boy, and Davido who are celebrated as Nigeria’s most dominant global musical exports.

However, the singer during his latest appearance on Mic On Podcast with Seun Okinbaloye, stated that “Burna Boy is currently at the top”, globally.

“I have favourite songs from the three. But I think Burna is on a different level right now. In terms of music influence and global reach, Burna is currently at the top across the world. That said, everyone is doing fantastically well.”

Nigerian Afrobeat musician, Seun Kuti, has accused singer Wizkid of stealing his nickname.

He made the claim during a recent livestream after a Wizkid’s fan urged him to change his nickname from “Big Bird” because Wizkid also bears “Biggest Bird”.

Kuti told the fan to advise Wizkid to be original, stressing that he has been answering the name long before Wizkid.

“Wizkid stole my name. Tell your fave to be original. Why are you telling me to change my name? Sorry, I can’t change it. This name has been here since. I am the first to come up with it. I am not dragging it with anybody, please,” he said.
