Afrobeats currently going through purge, returning to real music – Joeboy

Popular Nigerian singer, Joeboy has said that Afrobeats is currently ongoing through renaissance, emphasising that the genre is being purged of adulterated music.

Speaking midway into his performance at his sold-out Valentine’s Day show in Lagos, the ‘Faji’ crooner explained that Afrobeats was returning to “real music.”

He added that “wack music no longer have a place in the genre.

“Afrobeats right now is going through a purge. We are getting back to the times where real music is going to stay – no more gimmicking and all of that.

“I can feel it already and I am happy that we are getting back to those zones where the music speaks. I thank God for that,” he expressed.

DAILY POST recalls that at the beginning of the 2020s decade, the Nigerian music industry saw a heavy fusion of Afrobeats with other genres, especially South Africa’s Amapiano, American hip-hop and R&B.

This led to critics calling for a return to “original Afrobeats”, claiming that the fusion of foreign genres, often intended to cater for a global audience, has diluted Afrobeats.

The situation started changing in 2024 when some Nigerians artists began making “real Afrobeats” again and stopped infusing too much of Amapiano in their sounds.

Many Nigerian music buffs have hailed this as a move in the right direction, even though they admitted that it would take some time for Afrobeats to fully recover its original rhythm.

2027: Peter Obi can’t win presidential election with sympathy votes – Comedian DeeOne

Ex-Big Brother Naija housemate and comedian, DeeOne, has called out former presidential candidate of the Labor Party, Peter Obi, for his lack of willingness to spend money on his political ambition.

DeeOne spoke in a viral Instagram video on Saturday morning, while reacting to the emergence of the City Boy Movement – a political support group for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.

The movement which was established by the President’s son, Seyi Tinubu, has some top supporters of Peter Obi as its coordinators and directors in most of the South-East states.

Reacting to the development, comedian DeeOne advised Peter Obi to step up his game by being willing to spend money, noting that some of his agents in the 2023 election were being fed by other political parties at the poling unit.

While condemning his popular slang of “We no dey give shishi”, DeeOne noted that Peter Obi cannot win 2027 presidential election with sympathy votes.

He said: “If you want Mr Peter Obi to do well in the coming 2027 election, let us tell him the truth. You cannot win presidential election with sympathy votes. It may have given him some leverage in the last election, but in the 2027 election, it is not going to work.

“I’m not saying that you should not buy groundnuts Mr Peter Obi, I’m not saying that you should not price groundnuts but all those strategies will not work again. The worst Mr Peter Obi will make or anybody supporting him will make is to look down on this City Boy movement. Look at what they’re doing, it’s not a joke. Presidential election no be cho cho cho. You have to show workings.

“In the last election in the US, Donald Trump spent $66 million of his own money. The government is only saying no to vote buying, no be campaign. Just imagine, Labor Party agents during the last election did not see water to drink at poling unit. They did not see food to chop, what kind of thing is that? If Mr Peter Obi does not have his own money to spend on his own ambition, then he should call his own followers and ask them to donate and he will give account of how he spent the money. No be say, you go say eeh we no dey spend shi shi.

“You no dey spend shi shi, are you the one on the field. Are you risking your life to count the vote? People are doing that, at least they should get something to eat. Do you know that it was other parties that gave Labor Party agents food and water to drink during the last election. Or should we bring out evidence? Come on, my people, telling Mr Peter Obi the truth doesn’t mean you don’t like him. It only means that you want him to do well in the next election.”
