Former South Side Compton Crips gang leader Duane “Keffe D” Davis has been found guilty of the 1996 murder of legendary rapper Tupac Shakur, ending nearly three decades of uncertainty surrounding one of hip-hop’s most notorious killings.
A 12-member jury in Las Vegas unanimously convicted the 63-year-old Davis of first-degree murder with a deadly weapon after deliberating for less than three hours.
The conviction marks the first guilty verdict in the decades-old case and exposes Davis to a potential sentence of life imprisonment without parole.
Davis, who had pleaded not guilty, told the judge after the verdict that he “plans to appeal this matter.”
The verdict was met with an emotional reaction in the courtroom. Tupac’s sister, Sekyiwa “Set” Shakur, was seen crying as the decision was read, while Davis’ son covered his face with one hand. Several people in the gallery wiped away tears and embraced members of the prosecution team.
Prosecutors built much of their case around statements Davis had made publicly over the years, including accounts in his 2019 memoir and recordings of conversations with investigators.
In those accounts, Davis acknowledged being inside the white Cadillac from which the shots were fired and said he supplied the gun used in the attack.
The prosecution argued that despite inconsistencies in Davis’ accounts over the years, one crucial detail remained unchanged: his presence in the vehicle involved in the shooting.
Chief Deputy District Attorney Binu Palal told jurors that if they believed Davis’ statements, they did not need additional independent evidence to establish his involvement.
The defence, however, argued that Davis’ claims were exaggerated and amounted to “bravado” intended to sell his memoir and enhance his public profile. The defence also argued that his statements were not sufficiently corroborated by other evidence.
The jury ultimately rejected that argument.
Prosecutors said the killing was carried out in retaliation for a confrontation earlier that night between Tupac’s entourage and Davis’ nephew, Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson.
According to evidence presented during the trial, Tupac and members of his entourage had beaten Anderson at a Las Vegas casino.
Davis later said he was enraged by the confrontation and joined three other men in a white Cadillac to search for Tupac and Death Row Records executive Marion “Suge” Knight.
He told investigators that he passed a firearm toward the back seat of the vehicle before they located Tupac and Knight.
The prosecution said one of the men in the back seat then opened fire.
Tupac was stopped at a red light on September 7, 1996, when the white Cadillac pulled alongside his vehicle and gunfire erupted.
The rapper was struck several times and died from his injuries six days later at the age of 25.
Although prosecutors accused Davis of orchestrating the attack, they did not identify the person who actually fired the fatal shots. The other three men who were in the Cadillac have since died.
Under Nevada law, prosecutors did not have to establish that Davis personally pulled the trigger to secure a murder conviction.
Tupac’s stepbrother, Mopreme Shakur, had expressed cautious optimism before the trial but also acknowledged the pain caused by decades of unanswered questions.
Recalling the night Tupac was shot, Mopreme described rushing to Las Vegas and sitting beside his brother in hospital while the family waited and hoped for his recovery.
But he said no court verdict could fully deliver the justice the family wanted.
“The justice I would like, I’ll never get. I want my little brother back,” Mopreme said.
That sentiment underscored the emotional significance of the verdict for Tupac’s family, nearly 30 years after his death.
Tupac Shakur’s killing became one of the defining events of 1990s hip-hop, coming at the height of tensions between rival factions associated with the West Coast and East Coast rap scenes.
Shakur, one of the most commercially successful and influential rappers of his generation, was closely associated with Death Row Records and the Mob Piru street gang. Davis was a leader of the rival South Side Compton Crips.
His murder fuelled years of speculation, conspiracy theories and competing accounts of what happened that night.
For decades, no one had been charged.
That changed in 2023, when Davis was arrested and charged with murder after years of making public statements about his alleged involvement. The prosecution subsequently used those statements, his memoir and recordings of his conversations with investigators as major components of its case.
The trial began on August 17 and featured testimony from dozens of witnesses, alongside hours of recorded conversations.
After the jury delivered its verdict, the nearly 30-year-old mystery surrounding Tupac’s death entered a new chapter.
But with Davis vowing to appeal and the identity of the actual gunman still officially unresolved, the legal story surrounding one of music history’s most famous murders is not necessarily over.
