A windstorm accompanied by heavy rainfall has destroyed several houses in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State, leaving many residents displaced and worsening hardship in a community still recovering from last year’s floods.
It was gathered that the incident occurred between 11:00 p.m. and midnight on Sunday, when strong winds swept through the area, blowing off roofs and damaging homes.
Residents who spoke with our correspondent called for urgent intervention from the government and well-meaning individuals to ease their situation.
Many of those affected have taken shelter with relatives, in public buildings, or are making temporary repairs to their homes.
Some residents linked the scale of the destruction to environmental degradation, especially deforestation, which they say has made the area more vulnerable to severe weather.
No casualties were reported, but the damage to property has left many families struggling.
The Chairman of Mokwa Local Government Area, Jibrin Abdullahi Muregi, confirmed the incident, saying the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) and other relevant authorities have been notified for necessary action.
