Manchester City striker Erling Haaland broke two of Lionel Messi’s UEFA Champions League records on Wednesday despite his side’s 4–2 home defeat to defending champions Paris Saint-Germain.
PSG dominated the first half at the Etihad Stadium, with Désiré Doué and Ousmane Dembélé scoring in the 13th and 15th minutes, respectively.
Vitinha extended the visitors’ lead in the 32nd minute as Luis Enrique’s side went into the break with a three-goal advantage.
Haaland reduced the deficit for City in the 53rd minute, but Maghnes Akliouche restored PSG’s three-goal lead in the 62nd minute.
The Norwegian striker scored again in the 75th minute, but City could not complete their comeback.
Despite the defeat, Haaland became the fastest player to reach 60 Champions League goals, achieving the milestone in just 60 appearances and surpassing Messi’s previous record of 80 matches.
The 26-year-old also became the youngest player to reach 60 goals in the competition, doing so at 26 years and 85 days, one day younger than Messi was when he reached the same milestone.
Haaland had previously become the fastest player to score 50 Champions League goals, reaching the milestone in 49 appearances and surpassing the previous record of 62 matches held by Ruud van Nistelrooy.
The two goals against PSG also took Haaland’s Champions League tally for Manchester City to 38, making him the club’s all-time leading scorer in the competition, ahead of Sergio Agüero, who scored 36.
