Lassa fever Statistics as at April 2026

  • Total Deaths: 170.
  • Confirmed Cases: 663.
  • Case Fatality Rate (CFR): 25.2% (significantly higher than 18.5% in 2025).
  • Impacted States: 22 States (with 94 LGAs affected).
  • Epicenters: Ondo, Edo, Bauchi, Taraba, and Benue states.
  • Demographics: The 21–30 age group is the most affected.
  • Worker Infection: 6 healthcare workers were infected in a single week reported in March. 
  • Declining Weekly Cases: Despite a rising cumulative death toll, weekly confirmed cases declined from 51 in week 13 to 22 in week 14.
  • High Risk Period: Cases tend to rise annually during the dry season.
  • Cause: The illness is transmitted through food or household items contaminated by rodent urine/faeces.
