A Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has adjourned proceedings until May 26, 2026, for the proprietor of Wisdom Gate School and four management staff members to enter their plea in a case surrounding the death of a two-year-old pupil, Winnie Akekue.
The defendants, who are attached to the Eligbolo campus of Wisdom Gate School in Port Harcourt, are facing allegations of negligence in connection with the toddler’s death, which reportedly occurred within the school premises.
At the resumed hearing on Tuesday, counsel to the defendants informed the court that the prosecution, particularly the Rivers State Ministry of Justice, had not yet served his clients with the necessary court processes.
He consequently requested an adjournment to enable proper service of the documents.
After listening to the application, the trial judge, Justice Monima Danagogo, directed the prosecution to ensure that all relevant court processes are duly served on the defence before the next adjourned date.
Justice Danagogo also ruled that the administrative bail earlier granted to the accused persons by the Nigeria Police should remain in effect.
The court further ordered that the surety standing for the defendants must continue to appear in court pending the resolution of the plea proceedings.
Winnie Akekue reportedly died in March at the school’s Eligbolo campus after a shelf allegedly collapsed on her.
The school was temporarily shut down by the Rivers State Government pending the outcome of the investigation.
