The Nigeria Police Force has raided a suspected secessionist camp in Owerre Ezukala, Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State, recovering heavy weapons, explosives and live ammunition during the operation.
The raid was carried out by operatives of the Inspector-General of Police’s Intelligence Response Team and the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, on Tuesday, May 6, following intelligence obtained from a detained suspect identified as Nnamdi Ogbonna, 37.
The Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday 13th May, saying the operatives engaged the hoodlums in a gun duel before successfully taking over the camp.
According to him, items recovered from the hideout included one General Purpose Machine Gun loaded with about 2,000 rounds of live ammunition, two fabricated rocket launchers, 25 rocket propellers, 10 improvised explosive devices, one locally made Beretta pistol, two pump-action guns and three hand grenades.
“The operatives acted on credible intelligence and stormed the camp where the armed criminals were regrouping. The suspects fled the scene with varying degrees of bullet injuries after a fierce exchange of gunfire with security operatives,” the police spokesman said.
He added that a suspect in custody confessed to participating in attacks on security formations and government facilities in the state.
The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, commended the operatives for the successful operation and reaffirmed the command’s commitment to sustaining the crackdown on criminal elements threatening peace and security in the state.
