2026 World Cup: FIFA confirms final decision on Iran’s participation
FIFA president, Gianni Infantino, has said Iran will play at the 2026 World Cup.
Infantino also insisted they will play their group matches in the United States as scheduled, despite the Middle East war.
“Iran will be at the World Cup,” he said, speaking at half-time of Iran’s friendly against Costa Rica in Turkey.
“That’s why we’re here. We’re delighted because they’re a very, very strong team, I’m very happy.
“I’ve seen the team, I’ve spoken to the players and the coach, so everything is fine.”
Infantino made it clear that Iran’s “matches will be played where they are supposed to be, according to the draw”.
The World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada, kicks off June 11.

Speaking to The Athletic, the Spain international insisted that the Blues lacked experience.
According to him, Liam Rosenior’s side made a mistake by attacking the Parisians without a clear structure.
“We lacked experience. For a lot of players, it was the first time playing a match of that calibre, and we paid the price.
“You can always make a mistake, but we should have handled it better. There was a return game to play, and if you keep a cool head, you go back to London with a 3-2 defeat (the score with five minutes left of normal time in the first leg), and anything can happen.
“We made a mistake, tried to attack without a clear structure and then PSG took the chance and proved they have that cutting edge.
“Results like that are always hard to take. You are fighting and training every day only to realise, at the very end, that when games matter, we are still a bit away from the top level.”
