EPL: It’s their title to lose – Merson on Arsenal’s 3-0 win over Fulham

Former England midfielder, Paul Merson, has said the Premier League is Arsenal’s to lose.

Merson was speaking on Sky Sports, following the Gunners’ 3-0 win over Fulham on Saturday.

Viktor Gyokeres scored a brace, while Bukayo Saka also got on the scoresheet, as Mikel Arteta’s men ran riot in the first half.

The win sees Arsenal go six points clear at the top, although Manchester City now have two games in hand.

But Merson said: “Looking at Arsenal today, you would expect them to comfortably see off West Ham at the London Stadium next week.

“They might be out of sight when they welcome an already relegated Burnley side to the Emirates a week later too.

“I’m sorry to say but it’s Arsenal’s title to lose at the moment.”

In a post on X, Morgan hailed Saka and Gyökeres, insisting that the pair have been brilliant for the Premier League North London club so far this season.

“3-0! Sensational stuff by Arsenal, best first-half performance of the season. These two [Saka and Viktor Gyökeres] have been brilliant,” Morgan wrote.

“But the whole team has played with fire and ferocity. Love it. Keep attacking, chaps, rack up a cricket score.”

The win over Fulham means Arsenal are now six points ahead of Manchester City in the Premier League table.

However, Pep Guardiola’s side has two games in hand and will face Everton on Monday.

The defensive midfielder has around one year left on his contract with the 19th-time Belgian champions.

EPL: Alan Smith speaks on Super Eagles’ Fernandez’s move to Arsenal

Former Arsenal striker, Alan Smith has expressed skepticism regarding reports that link Emmanuel Fernandez to a summer transfer to Arsenal, questioning both the necessity for reinforcements in the centre-back position and the player’s preparedness for a higher level of competition.

Fernandez, who began his tenure with Rangers at the start of the season, has had an impressive debut year in Scotland.

The 24-year-old has surpassed initial expectations at Ibrox Stadium, solidifying his role as a crucial player in defense while also contributing offensively.

His reliable performances have garnered attention, leading to his first call-up to the Nigeria national football team and a spot in the Scottish PFA Team of the Year.

The recognition has reportedly attracted interest from various European clubs, including Arsenal, Bayer Leverkusen, and Feyenoord.

Nevertheless, Smith remains doubtful that a transfer to north London is feasible at this point in Fernandez’s career.

In discussing the rumors, the former Arsenal forward questioned whether the Gunners genuinely need to bolster their central defense.

“I don’t see why they’d need a centre-half anyway,” Smith remarked to Scotman. “Considering his previous clubs, Spalding United on loan, Peterborough.”

While acknowledging the defender’s commendable performance in Scotland, Smith also expressed concerns about Fernandez’s ability to maintain that level of consistently in a more challenging setting.

“Yes, he’s had a good season at Rangers, but who knows whether he can sustain that kind of form at a higher level,” he added.

Smith further emphasized Arsenal’s current defensive strength as a possible obstacle to any transfer.

“I’d be surprised if Arsenal pursued him given that [Jurrian] Timber can play in the middle; plus they’ve got [Cristhian] Mosquera, so they’ve got good cover in the middle,” Smith concluded.

The Nigerian international has had a remarkable season with Rangers, making a notable impact at both ends of the pitch with six goals in 29 appearances across all competitions.
