Maverick singer Seun Kuti has warned Afrobeats artists to desist from comparing themselves to his father, the late Afrobeat pioneer, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.

He frowned against the actions of some Afrobeats artist who address themselves as the modern day equivalent of Fela just because they sample his songs or draw inspiration from his style of music.

The Grammy-nominated singer explained that he is not against sampling Fela’s works, but against the comparisons between the late music legend and some Afrobeats artists.

He emphasised that sampling Fela’s music isn’t tantamount to equal status with him.

Speaking in a recent episode of the Hits Don’t Lie podcast, Kuti said, “A few people have done good samples of Fela’s music. But the only critique that I have is that sampling Fela doesn’t make you Fela.

“So, people should stop saying that they are my dad. That is crazy. It crazy when people say that they are the ‘New Fela.’ Where is the ‘Bob Marley’? It is only in Nigeria you hear such. We so wild stuff here. People are wild.”

Several Afrobeats artists including Wizkid and Burna Boy have drawn comparisons with Fela after sampling him on multiple occasions.

Street-hop artists such as Bella Shmurda and Portable have publicly referred to themselves as “New Fela”.

Rapper Olamide sparked controversy late last year after declaring Wizkid “the greatest Afrobeats artist after Fela”.

The dispute between Afrobeats superstar, Davido, and 12-year-old Anuoluwapo Mitchelle, who claims to be his daughter, has intensified following the release of a leaked chat in which the singer allegedly threatened to have the girl’s mother, Ayo Labinjoh, arrested for ongoing “harassment”.

The conversation, which appeared on Anuoluwapo’s Instagram page, co-managed by her mother, shows a tense exchange where Davido reportedly stood his ground, denying her paternity.

While the singer has not confirmed the chat’s authenticity, the messages have quickly gone viral.

In the leaked chat, the singer allegedly warned, “Stop this nonsense. Keep playing, and I will arrest your mother. Try this nonsense again. I’m not your father.”

When Anuoluwapo clarified that her mother was not part of her personal appeal, Davido reportedly doubled down:

“I am not your father. Go and find your father. This is the last time. I’m warning. I’ve done five DNA tests. You’re not mine. Please stop this nonsense before it gets messy.”

Anuoluwapo asked for the results of the tests, and Davido reportedly replied,

“Yes, I will show you. Five. Two of the hospitals were chosen by your mother. Two were chosen by me. All negative. Four tests. Then one test 10 years. That’s five. You’re not my child.”

Expressing frustration at the prolonged dispute, he added,

“You guys have been harassing me for years, and it has to stop. It’s not fair on my actual kids. Please, stop it.”

Davido reportedly indicated he would make the matter public and pursue legal action:

“Don’t worry, I will publish them tomorrow and in the newspaper. I will publish online and in newspaper. Then I will take your mom to court. She thinks it’s a game. Just watch. She will go to jail.”

When Anuoluwapo asked for the hospitals’ names, he allegedly responded:

“It will show in the tests. You don’t worry. I’m not your dad. Sorry. You’re not my child. We will publish everything. Warn your mother. You’re not an Adeleke. I’m sorry. You can also go to the hospitals and confirm for yourself.”

Popular media personality and content creator, Kolu, has begged his colleague, Carter Efe, to lend him N7 million to secure singer, Portable’s release from prison.

Kolu made the plea on Thursday during a livestream with Carter Efe on Twitch.

When Carter asked why he was concerned about the singer’s welfare, Kolu disclosed that it was Portable who brought him to Lagos and gave him the spotlight he needed to be famous.

Kolu said in Pidgin “Portable brought me to Lagos, I come blow. Na him help my life.”

DAILY POST reports that Portable was remanded in prison on Tuesday by the Federal High Court sitting in Ota, Ogun state over allegations of car theft and assault by his baby mama, Ashabi Simple.

Portable was also reportedly handcuffed and beaten in police custody.

Afrobeats star David Adeleke, widely known as Davido, has refuted allegations suggesting he is the father of a teenage girl who recently demanded a DNA test to confirm her paternity.

The singer clarified that he has never been involved in any personal relationship with the girl’s mother, adding that his first and only interaction with them occurred during the DNA testing exercise.

Davido revealed that a total of five DNA tests were carried out across different medical centers.

He explained that he personally selected three of the hospitals, while the remaining two were chosen by the girl and her mother.

According to him, all the test results unanimously showed that he is not the child’s biological father.

He described the entire episode as emotionally taxing and accused the girl’s mother of inappropriate conduct, while emphasising that he does not blame the teenager for the situation.

“This is the last time I will speak on this matter,” the singer said, insisting that the issue should be considered settled based on the medical findings.

Famous Nigerian musician, Seun Kuti, has defended Super Eagles’ player, Samuel Chukwueze amid criticism from Nigerians for missing penalty.

DAILY POST reports that Nigeria failed to qualify for the final of the Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, competition on Wednesday after losing to the host nation, Morocco.

Morocco defeated Nigeria on penalties during the AFCON semi-final on Wednesday after the match ended goalless.

Nigerian players, Chukwueze and Bruno however missed penalties for the Eagles while the Atlas Lions converted all their kicks.

Reacting to the Super Eagles’ loss, many Nigerians took to social media to drag Chukwueze for losing his sport kick during the penalty shootout.

However, defended him amid the backlash, singer Seun Kuti asked the critics to stop blaming Chukwueze for the country’s defeat, stating that Pele, the late Brazilian footballer widely regarded as one of the greatest players, also missed penalties.

Seun wrote in Pidgin English on his Instagram story; “Even Pele dey miss penalty. Leave Chukwueze alone.”

American rapper A$AP Rocky has revealed that his mom had always wanted him to be with Rihanna, disclosing that she once advised when he was in a relationship with another woman to end it and date the Barbadian singer instead.

In an interview with The New York Time, Rocky shared that then he was just friends with Rihanna and didn’t want more with her.

He said he was grateful he didn’t rush things back then to be with Rihanna because he wasn’t ready for commitment and Rihanna was also not ready for family life.

“Rihanna has always been my boo. I always f*cked with her. My mother used to say, ‘I know you like this girl that you are with right now, but I want you with Riri.’

“And I would tell her that Rihanna is just a friend. But my mother would insisted that Rihanna is a real one and that I should go for her. I’m telling you, mothers know best.

“However, I am thankful that my relationship with Rihanna started when it did. Because at anytime prior to that, I don’t think I was ready for something like that. I don’t think she was, either,” he said.

A$AP Rocky and Rihanna became close after he joined her Diamond Tour in 2013.

Rumours of their romance first started shortly after Rihanna split from billionaire boyfriend Hassan Jameel in January 2020, after three years together.

Rocky previously dated Kendall Jenner in 2016; their relationship ended in 2017.

Rihanna and Rocky welcomed their first child together in 2022, second in 2023, and third in 2025.

Popular Nigerian reality star and comedian, DeeOne, has called on the Nigeria government to investigate financial management of all Non-Governmental Organizations, NGOs in the country.

DeeOne made the call in a video on his Instagram page on Wednesday while calling the attention of the government to the unlawful activities of some of the NGOs.

He further disclosed that some of the non-governmental organizations are now being used to fund terrorism, kidnapping, trafficking and other atrocities

“Federal government of Nigeria, please investigate all the NGOs accounts in the country. A lot of them are being used to sponsor terrorism, for kidnappers, child trafficking sponsorship, a lot of them are being used for human harvesting sponsorship.

“Please do a thorough investigation on all these NGO accounts. In Nigeria today, if somebody should rescue somebody, the next thing the people will open an NGO, and the next thing they become a multi millionaire. We’re not saying you should not make money, but it has to be legit not at the expense of people’s lives,” he said.

Afrobeats singer, Davido has lost a $50,000 bet on Nigeria to beat Morocco in the African Cup of Nations semifinal clash on Wednesday as the Super Eagles lost 4-2 on penalties to the Atlas Lions.

Hours before the match, the singer posted his bet slip on social media, showing that he placed a $50,000 bet on the Super Eagles to beat Morocco.

However, he lost the bet after the game ended in a goalless draw in regulation time.

Meanwhile, popular Nigerian TikToker Peller has cried out after losing a $3,000 bet on Nigeria to beat Morocco in 90 minutes.

“Thank you Super Eagles for playing very well,” he said sarcastically. “I have lost my $3,000 bet. You guys were playing well the previous games before I decided to place a bet and watch your match.

“Maybe, if I stop watching your games, you will start playing well again,” he lamented during a livestream on Wednesday night.

Popular social media influencer VeryDarkMan, popularly known as VDM, has responded after reality TV personality Phyna described him as a “Very Dirty Boy” and blamed him for the collapse of her relationship with actress Iyabo Ojo.

Phyna had earlier claimed that her closeness to VeryDarkMan significantly contributed to the strain between her and Iyabo Ojo.

In a detailed public response, VeryDarkMan said he was deeply disappointed by the accusation, maintaining that his support for Phyna was always sincere and without conditions.

He explained that he consistently showed up for the former reality star at different stages of her career, including reposting promotions for her movies and offering guidance on both personal and professional issues.

Nigerian Afrobeats singer, Young Game has drawn attention to the often-ignored hurdles confronting African diaspora artists seeking recognition within the Afrobeats industry, despite their growing contributions to the genre’s global success.

Young Game, born Sunday Paul Bassey and a native of Ndi Okpo Ihechiowa, Arochukwu Local Government Area of Abia State, is currently based in Italy. He is part of a rising generation of African creatives abroad who proudly project their culture beyond the continent but struggle to gain equal visibility with artists operating from Nigeria.

According to the singer, physical distance from Nigeria’s music ecosystem remains a major disadvantage. “Afrobeats is global now, but access is still very local,” Young Game said, noting that artists outside the country often lack the industry connections, media exposure, radio support and live performance opportunities needed to break records.

He explained that while many diaspora musicians invest heavily in music production, promotion and distribution, their efforts are frequently sidelined due to industry gatekeeping and location bias. “You can have the sound, the story and the consistency, but without proximity to the industry, it’s easy to be ignored,” he stated.

Young Game also pointed to the identity dilemma faced by many African artists abroad, who are sometimes viewed as “too foreign” for the local market and “not African enough” for international audiences. “We are constantly trying to prove our authenticity, even though our roots are unquestionable,” he said.

Despite the challenges, the singer stressed that diaspora artists remain vital to Afrobeats’ global expansion. Their exposure to diverse cultures and audiences, he noted, enables innovation and helps introduce the genre to new territories. “Many of us are building Afrobeats quietly in Europe, America and beyond performing, promoting and planting seeds that later grow into global movements,” he added.

Calling for greater collaboration and inclusion, Young Game urged industry stakeholders to embrace diaspora creatives as an integral part of the culture. “Afrobeats is strongest when it is unified. Diaspora artists should not be treated as outsiders, but as extensions of the culture,” he said.
