The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) on Friday sealed Cyvillian Garden, a well-known relaxation hub located on Abacha Road, Mararaba, Nasarawa State, over excessive noise pollution.
The agency said the decision followed numerous complaints from residents about the facility’s noise levels, which they described as intolerable.
NESREA further revealed that the establishment failed to comply with repeated warnings and abatement notices issued to mitigate the nuisance.
Speaking on the enforcement, the Director General of NESREA, Dr. Innocent Barikor, said, “We took all necessary steps before getting to the point of sealing. Complaints from residents were investigated, and noise readings were taken at different times. These readings were significantly above the permissible limits for a residential area.”
Dr. Barikor, represented by the Director of Inspection and Enforcement, Dr. Christopher Beka, explained that the agency had made efforts to resolve the matter amicably before taking action.
“Abatement notices were subsequently issued to the facility as required by law. We also held an arbitration meeting where the facility was advised to operate within the standards set out in the National Environmental (Noise Standards and Control) Regulations, 2009,” he stated.
He emphasized the negative impact of noise pollution on health and quality of life said; “Noise pollution is a very serious issue, and we are tackling it headlong because the health of citizens is affected. It is intolerable that one would return from a hectic day at work and be unable to sleep at night because of noise. You cannot run your business or create fun for yourself at the expense of others.”
Dr. Barikor assured the public of NESREA’s commitment to ensuring a high quality of life for Nigerians through the enforcement of environmental regulations.
He also hinted at further enforcement activities across the country, aimed at addressing similar violations.

The United Nations, UN, High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has said that the conflict in Sudan is taking an more dangerous turn for civilians.
Türk stated this in a statement on Friday.
This is coming in the wake of reports that dozens were brutally killed in ethnically targeted attacks in Al Jazirah state in the southeast.
This is also amid reports of an imminent battle for the control of the country’s capital, Khartoum.
DAILY POST gathered that the Sudanese Armed Forces, SAF, and a rival military, the Rapid Support Forces, RSF, have been fighting since April 2023 in what Türk described as a senseless war.
As they battle for control at all cost, direct and ethnically motivated attacks on civilians are becoming increasingly common.
“The situation for civilians in Sudan is already desperate, and there is evidence of the commission of war crimes and other atrocity crimes.
“I fear the situation is now taking a further, even more dangerous turn,” he said.
It was gathered that last week no fewer than 21 people were killed in just two attacks on camps in Al Jazirah, located some 40 kilometres from the state capital, Wad Madani.
However, the actual number of attacks directed at civilians, and of civilians killed, are likely to be higher.
On January 10, at least eight civilians were killed in an attack on Taiba Camp, and at least 13 women and one man were abducted.
Houses were burnt and livestock, crops and other property looted, while dozens of families were displaced.
The next day, at least 13 civilians were killed, including two boys, in an assault on Khamsa Camp.
The attacks came in the context of the recapture of Wad Madani by the SAF.
Reports suggest they were carried out by the Sudan Shield Forces led by Abu Aqla Keikal, a former RSF commander, who defected to the other side last October.
The attacks reportedly targeted the Kanabi, a historically marginalised group comprised mainly of Nuba and other African tribes.
Türk noted that the Sudanese authorities’ assurance that the attacks would be fully investigated and those responsible brought to justice, and an investigation committee has been established.

The lawsuit, which sought a reversal of Biden’s ban with declaratory and injunctive relief, argued that Biden did not have the authority to impose such a ban, saying that the power to do so rests with the U.S. Congress.
Biden’s move announced on January 6 was considered mostly symbolic, as it will not impact areas where oil and gas development is currently underway, and mainly covers zones where drillers have no important prospects, including in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
Biden said the ban, which will affect 625 million acres of ocean, was in line with his agenda to fight climate change.
The Biden administration, which leaves office on January 20 when Republican President-elect, Donald Trump, takes over, has not commented on the lawsuit.
According to the lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Louisiana, Biden and Interior Secretary, Deb Haaland are defendants, with the states of Louisiana, Alabama, Alaska, Georgia and Mississippi being the plaintiffs.
The plaintiffs also include two trade groups – the American Petroleum Institute and the Gulf Energy Alliance.
However, Trump had said he would move quickly to revoke the ban.

Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has expressed that as an opposition governor during the 2023 general elections, he celebrated President Bola Tinubu’s victory, believing it would lead to progress.
However, he now believes that “freedom and development are eluding us.”
Speaking to journalists during a visit from Apostle Johnson Suleiman, Founder and General Overseer of Omega Fire Ministry, at the Government House in Bauchi, Mohammed criticized Tinubu’s approach to governance. He stated that Tinubu assumed power without a clear blueprint or manifesto and is surrounded by “misfits.”
“I hold President Tinubu in high regard, but someone must speak up and tell him that he is surrounded by misfits. I can now see, from the perspective of the Man of God, that Tinubu entered governance unprepared, without an agenda or a manifesto,” Mohammed remarked.
The governor further explained that he initially supported Tinubu due to his record as Lagos State Governor, believing his success in Lagos would translate to national progress. “I celebrated when he became President, despite belonging to a different party. I thought freedom had arrived, but now I see that both freedom and development are slipping away.”
Mohammed stressed that his criticism was not personal but centered on the policies of the current administration, which he believes may harm the people.
“I want to make it clear, in the presence of Apostle Johnson Suleiman, that I have no personal grudge against the President. I respect the office of the President, as I have always respected leadership. I have consistently supported actions that dignify leadership, including my role in the Senate during the Doctrine of Necessity when I supported the elevation of Goodluck Jonathan to the Presidency.”
He emphasized that Nigeria should treat its citizens as such, not as customers, and that policies should unite rather than divide the nation. “We should not enact policies that lead to division or impunity. We must respect our diversity and practice inclusivity, just as Prophet Suleiman exemplifies by spreading his message globally.”
Governor Mohammed concluded by urging the President to consider his advice in the spirit of goodwill, suggesting that governance would be more effective through inclusivity and clear vision.
“Leadership should not be reactive or based on foreign policies that are poorly understood. Without a clear vision, we risk heading down a path of destruction,” he said.

Auwalu Ismail Bagwai, the Public Relations Officer of the polytechnic confirmed the attack on friday. “The female student entered the office alongside her boyfriend, identifying the lecturer as the obstacle to her desired course. The lecturer sustained injuries to his hands while attempting to defend himself. Other students in the office intervened, prompting the assailants to flee the scene.
The lecturer was promptly transported to the hospital for medical treatment. School security officers subsequently proceeded to Dorayi, the student’s residence, to apprehend her and her boyfriend. However, upon their arrival, the student fled into her house, and a group of thugs emerged, wielding weapons, and assaulted the security officers.

The Israeli security cabinet finally on Friday voted to approve the hostage release-ceasefire deal with Hamas in Gaza.
A statement by the prime minister’s office said the cabinet voted Friday afternoon with a recommendation that the government adopt it.
The recommendation by the forum of top ministers was made after evaluating all diplomatic, security, and humanitarian aspects of the agreement, with the understanding that the deal supports the achievement of the war’s goals.
However, the Finance Minister, Bezalel Smotrich and the National Security Minister, Itamar Ben Gvir, voted against the deal.
The deal, announced by mediators on Wednesday, is scheduled to take effect on Sunday afternoon.
According to a statement issued by the Justice Ministry, Israel is set to release 95 Palestinian prisoners including 10 teenagers on the first day of the truce, agreed to by both warring parties.
The first phase of the three-part deal is expected to last six weeks.
The number of prisoners scheduled to be released on Sunday includes 70 females and 25 males.
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Gaza’s Civil Defense, Mahmoud Basal, said that since the ceasefire was announced on Wednesday, Israeli strikes on Gaza have killed 117 people and injured over 266.
Hamas had earlier on Friday, accused Israel of trying to foil the deal through deliberate intensification of aerial attacks on the battered enclave.

This is coming hours after the US Supreme Court upheld a law banning TikTok in the United States on national security grounds if its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, does not sell it, putting the popular short-video app on track to go dark in just two days.
The decision of the court threw the social media platform and its 170 million American users off balance and its fate in the hands of the incoming president, Donald Trump, who has vowed to rescue TikTok after returning to the presidency on Monday.
“The statements issued today by both the Biden White House and the Department of Justice have failed to provide the necessary clarity and assurance to the service providers that are integral to maintaining TikTok’s availability to over 170 million Americans.
“Unless the Biden Administration immediately provides a definitive statement to satisfy the most critical service providers assuring non-enforcement, unfortunately TikTok will be forced to go dark on January 19,” TikTok said in a statement.
Following the US Supreme Court’s decision, the incoming president, Donald Trump, in a post on social media said the Supreme Court decision was expected, and everyone must respect it.
“My decision on TikTok will be made in the not too distant future, but I must have time to review the situation. Stay tuned,” he said.
Responding to the decision, TikTok CEO, Shou Chew, said that the company will continue its efforts to ensure the app remains accessible for Americans potentially now with an assist from President-elect, Donald Trump.
“We have been fighting to protect the constitutional right of free speech for the more than 170 million Americans who use our platform every day to connect, create, discover and achieve their dreams.
“On behalf of everyone at TikTok, and our users across the country, I want to thank President Trump for his commitment to work with us to find a solution that keeps TikTok available in the United States,” Chew said.
