South East Senators Warn JAMB Against Exam Glitch Reoccurrence

The South East Senate Caucus has expressed worries over what it described as ‘curious and highly suspicious,’ JAMB examination glitch in some centres in Lagos and especially in the whole of South East in the last exam circle.

The caucus in a statement by its Chairman, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe on Saturday in Abuja, said it would be disheartening and hopes not to contemplate such conspiracy theory, “that there is a narrow agenda being pursued to deliberately shortchange and harm the future of our children”.

Though the caucus after a careful assessment of the reports of the ugly incident, noted with cautious optimism the efforts being made to mitigate the near disaster, particularly the rescheduling of the examination, but however warns that a future reoccurrence will be unacceptable.

Nonetheless, the South East Senators he added welcomed the timely acceptance of fault as expressed through the open declaration of regrets and tearful apology by the Joint Admission and Martriculatiin Board (JAMB) management, particularly it’s Registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede.

Notwithstanding, the South East lawmakers according to Abaribe hopes and warns that such display of penitence in public would not be an effort to mask a future sinister agenda aimed at harming the educational advancement of children of the South East region.

Part of the statement read, “The so-called glitch as curious and suspicious as it were is enough to erode confidence and dangerously lower national pride among the future generation.

“The relevant national education drivers must recognise the inherent danger of injecting hateful politics and narrow parochial consideration in both policy enunciation and its implementations.

“That the glitch happened in the whole of South East raises pertinent questions that must be answered by JAMB to assuage the growing frustrations and fears among the people of the region particularly the children who are directly at the receiving end. We must pursue a Nigerian agenda and not a narrow one that will ultimately injure national unity

“Education remains one of the most important bedrocks of any society’s advancement.

“It is one major indices of development in every facet of life that can never be faulted. Education is a major pivot that triggers national development.

“Every child is entitled to it, therefore we must not play roulette with it? Abaribe declares.

“Therefore, he said the South East Senate Caucus is at alert and under pressure as it unequivocally demands firm assurance from JAMB and other relevant national educational policy drivers that there will never be a reoccurrence of such scandalous glitch in the future.”

Minister Seeks Protection, Mentorship for Boy-child

Minister of Women Affairs, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, has called on families to listen, and raise the boy child with purpose and tenderness, courage and care, as the world commemorates the 2025 International Day of The Boy Child, themed, “Building Self-esteem in Boys: Stand Up, Be Heard, Be Seen”.

In a statement on Friday by her Special Adviser on Media & Publicity, Mr Jonathan Eze, the minister stated that it was a mandate for every family, every school, every faith institution, and every policy table, to pay attention to the development of the boy child.

The minister who had always advocated for family cohesion, noted that for too long, national programming and advocacy have rightly focused on addressing the historic marginalization of the girl-child, noting that unintentionally, though, overlooked the unique vulnerabilities of the boy-child.

She said that the imbalance had created a silent crisis; one where boys are left without adequate emotional support, mentorship, or protection.

“Today, as the sun rises across our great Nation, Nigeria; from the creeks of the Niger-Delta to the hills of the North, from the villages of the East to the bustling towns of the West; we turn our hearts and focus to the boy-child; often seen, yet not always heard; always expected to be strong, but rarely given the room to simply be whole.

“The International Day of the Boy Child is more than a calendar event for me as the Minister of Women Affairs; it is a call. A call to see our boys, to hear them, to raise them with purpose and tenderness, courage and care.

“As the National Mechanism for the advancement of Women, Children, Families and other vulnerable groups in the country, the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs bears the sacred duty to ensure that no child is forgotten or forsaken in our national journey. Experts Deliver Strategies for Resilient Businesses at EDGE Conference

Business leaders and experts have discussed various pathways and strategies towards building resilient and profitable businesses in Nigeria.

This was during the Entrepreneurship Development and Growth Excellence (EDGE) conference, organized by Junior Chamber International, JCI Lekki Royale, recently.

NIDCOM, NAPTIP Urge FG to Declare War on Human Trafficking

Chairman/CEO, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has called for a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approaches against human trafficking in the country.

She made the declaration at a strategic meeting with the Director General, National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Hajia Binta Adamu Bello, at NiDCOM Headquarters in Abuja.

Dabiri-Erewa, who noted that while progress has been made, more needs to be done stressed the traffickers should be named and shamed by enforcing stricter penalties as a deterrent to other criminal actors.

She said NAPTIP cannot work alone and called for closer collaboration with NiDCOM, the National Commission for Refugees Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI), and other sister agencies, to curb the menace.

The NiDCOM boss thanked the support of the First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), neighbouring governments, Nigerian Diaspora Communities, Wema Bank and NGOs for helping to rescue and reintegrate trafficked victims.

She commended the NAPTIP DG for her dedication and pledged continued support adding, “we will continue to do our best to save these young ones and encourage safe and regular pathways for migration.”

Like NiDCOM, Bello also pushed for more flexible policies and better funding to help NAPTIP to fully carry out its mandate against the menace.

NAPTIP Chairman thanked Dabiri-Erewa for NiDCOM’s support, especially in the recent rescue of 231 young Nigerians from Ghana. She agreed that tackling human trafficking requires joint action from government, society, and key stakeholders.

NAPTIP boss stressed the need for more awareness across all levels to highlight the dangers of trafficking.

She said, “We rescued last week 19 girls all pregnant for one man in an estate in Abuja, received nine girls from Cote D’ivoire, and other sordid stories not to mention here.”

Recognising NiDCOM’s role in engaging with Nigerians in the diaspora, she expressed her commitment to strengthening the NiDCOM-NAPTIP relationship.

Bello assured that the Agency will continue to protect the rights and dignity of Nigerians against trafficking in persons.

Wike: FCT Has Renovated 60 Schools

Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has revealed that more than 60 schools have been renovated by the FCT Administration.

He disclosed this yesterday at the inspection of the A2 to Pai Road project in Gwagwalada Area Council.

He assured that no sector would be neglected by the administration in the provision of critical projects, including health and education.

“I can tell you, no sector will be left abandoned, every sector will be focused on. But again, you know that road networks are essential for development.

“When there are no roads, which school can you attend?

“When there are no roads, which hospital can you visit?

“So, first and foremost, the key thing is that development relies on road networks worldwide,” Wike said.

He affirmed that the enthusiasm by the residents of Gwagwalada Area Council was a pointer that indeed, the Renewed Hope Agenda was at work.

He said, “When we visited Aguma Palace, we saw the enthusiasm of the people there. The market people and residents showed how happy they were. And that is what we have assured Nigerians: that real hope is not just mere talk. It’s something that has come to stay, something that Nigerians will appreciate.

Attai Named Regional Director of Civil Society Organisations for AU6RG

Founder of the African Women in Leadership Organisation (AWLO), Dr. Elisha Attai, has been appointed Regional Director of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) for the African Union Sixth Region Global (AU6RG).

This appointment marks a notable step in the bloc’s efforts to integrate grassroots and diaspora voices into its regional development agenda.

Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), according to a statement issued jointly by African Union Sixth Region Global (AU6RG) and the Economic Community African Sixth Region (ECASR), two organisations that serve as bridges between ECOWAS and the African diaspora.

In this role, Dr. Attai will oversee civil society engagement strategies across the 15 ECOWAS member states. Working with regional governments, grassroots groups, and international partners, he is expected to strengthen public participation, improve civic dialogue, and foster connections between Africa and its diaspora.

“I accept this appointment with a deep sense of responsibility and purpose,” Attai said in a statement.

“This role presents a vital opportunity to enhance the influence and impact of civil society organisations throughout West Africa. I intend to build on the foundations of trust, partnership, and inclusive advocacy to amplify local voices and promote sustainable development.”

Attai is best known for his work promoting women’s leadership across Africa and in the Diaspora. He founded the AWLO and led the African Women in Leadership Conference (AWLC). Bauchi Gov Pays Condolence Visit To Victims of Bandits’ Attack, Donates N100m

Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, has announced a donation of the sum of N100m to be divided among families of 23 hunters and civilians who lost their lives when armed bandits attacked some villages in Gwana District of Alkaleri Local Government Area of the state.

The beneficiaries of the monetary gesture are 13 members of the vigilante groups and 10 civilians who were Fulani cattle herders whose cattle were rustled by the bandits during the attack.

The governor made the announcement yesterday when he paid a condolence visit to the families of all victims at the Palace of the District Head of Duguri in Alkaleri LGA.

He explained that each family of the 13 vigilante members will get N5m while each family of the Fulani will get the sum of N3m as support for the families at this moment of grief.

The governor also announced the sum of N20m to the members of the vigilante groups in the area explaining that N10m is for them to procure necessary tools needed for their operations while the N10m was an immediate welfare for all of them.

He also announced that 500 of them will be offered permanent employment and be placed on the minimum wage of N70,000 per month assuring that before the end of the year, a total of 2,100 of them will be employed into the state civil service.

He said, “I believe this period is a test for us because we lost 23 people, 10 civilians and about 13 vigilante members. We are here on behalf of the government and the people of Bauchi State to commiserate with this community. The community of Alkaleri, especially Gwana, Yelwa-Duguri and part of Bauchi Local Government.”

“We really convey our condolences and may the souls of the departed rest in perfect peace. We know it is something that came as a test and definitely as they inflicted that serious loss on us, over 60 of them died too in a fierce battle,” the governor added.

“So the loss is not only our people that were killed. Our vigilantes, our security forces also decimated over 60 of them. This is to show the chivalry and the courage of our people despite their superior fire power, we were able to contain them through these young and able bodied vigilantes and security agencies,” he noted.

The governor further said, “I want to convey to you, the commiseration of the federal government, especially the office of the National Security Adviser. We are going to get a lot of assistance In-Sha-Allah from the security agencies more than what we were getting before.

“On our own part as a state government, I promise you that the vigilante organisation will employ about 2,100 before the end of the year. We are starting immediately with three to five hundred employment with minimum implied so that we will be able to give you work to do and we are starting with the communities that were worst hit,” he declared.

Mohammed further assured that “You are going to be trained by the security agencies. We are going to interact on the rules of engagement that will be acceptable so that there won’t be any extrajudicial killings but I reprimand the communities to be wary of informants. They are the ones giving us a way.

“They are the ones that are sabotaging us and they are living with us. They are worse than the miscreants and the bad people that came from other places.

“I will enjoin the District Heads, the Village Heads and other leaders down the line to look around and fish out these people so we can deal with them decisively through the security agencies,” he stated.

According to him, “Because of the sympathy the government and I have for the families of the fallen heroes, we are giving N5 million each to the family of the deceased vigilante members so that they will have something to at least, rely on.

“As for those who were civilians among the deceased, we are giving them N3 million each and we have formed a committee under the Chairmanship of the Chairman of the local government including the District Heads, security agencies to ensure equity and justice in the distribution.

“As for my vigilante people, I will give them N10 million to start with but the committee will also give them another N10 million to purchase whatever they can in terms of fuel so that they will be able to go round.”

“These people have come to the wrong place. We are ready to sacrifice our lives for our people to live,” the governor asserted.

In his remarks, the Commissioner of Police, Bauchi State, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, commended the governor for the prompt response to the incident saying that the immediate mobilisation of personnel to the area has doused tension.

Represented by the DCP Operations, the Police Commissioner assured that the Command will continue to be proactive in its operation in order to safeguard lives and property of the citizens.

Also speaking, the Executive Chairperson of Alkaleri LGC, Hassan Garba Bajama, expressed appreciation for the prompt response of the state government to the incident saying that it has given the people hope.

The two traditional rulers of the affected areas commended the governor for the condolence visit and assured him that they will continue to mobilise their subjects to support his administration.

NMDPRA to Ensure Petroleum Products Supply, Seamless Distribution

The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has assured that the federal government is committed to ensuring sustained petroleum products supply and seamless distribution in the country.

Delta State Coordinator of NMDPRA, Victor Ohwodiasa, gave the assurance yesterday at a Stakeholders Engagement/Alignment Meeting on Petroleum Movement in Delta State.

The stakeholders meeting was convened by the Warri Zonal Office of the NMDPRA.

The meeting was convened to address Safe-To-Load Initiative aimed at reducing Truck-In-Transit Accident, documentation of trucks conveying petroleum products, colour coding and branding of trucks amongst other issues

Addressing the participants, Ohwodiasa said the federal government was concerned about truck-in-transit accidents and products being delayed in transit, emphasising that delay in oil and gas industry obviously lead to additional cost in their operations.

“There is no cause for alarm, government is doing everything possible to ensure there is sustained product supply and the products are distributed without hitches,” he said.

Ohwodiasa said that the essence of the meeting was to avail critical stakeholders including the government, security agencies on the documentations they needed to checkout for and others.

“The essence of this meeting is to have an alignment with the critical stakeholders on critical issues that require inputs and collaboration of all concerned parties.

“Some of the areas of alignment are the colour coding of trucks that convey petroleum products within the country. The NMDPRA is enforcing colour coding and branding of trucks for easy identification of the product the truck is conveying.

“The colour coding for Petroleum Motor Spirit (PMS) is light blue with 75 cm height while that of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), is a combination of deep yellow and light blue with 75 cm height.

“Similarly, for Dual Purpose Kerosene (DPK), the colour coding is deep yellow shade with 75 cm height,” he said.

Ohwodiasa specifically drew the attention of the participants to Section 48 of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) while seeking for continued collaboration and synergy.

According to him, Section 48 stipulates that any government ministry, department or agency exercising any power or function or taking action which may have direct impact on the NMDPRA operations should consult with the Authority.

The coordinator said that the essence of the Section 48 was to ensure seamless and sustained movement and distribution of petroleum products within the country.

Ohwodiasa, who also spoke on the Safe-To-Load initiative of the federal government, explained that the initiative was aimed at reducing truck carnages on the roads.

The coordinator told the stakeholders that there was a need to reduce the capacity of trucks conveying petroleum products.

According to him, currently the approved maximum loading capacity of a truck is 60,000 litres adding that with time, the capacity will be scaled down to 45,000 litres in order to reduce truck-in-transit accidents.

Ohwodiasa also drew attention of the participants to the approved emergency numbers by the federal government, adding that it was tow-free.

He said that the numbers were 112 and 122 and urged anybody to call whenever there was an accident for prompt response.

“The numbers were tested by participants during the meeting and they were all functional,” he said.

Ohwodiasa said that the meeting was part of the regular sensitisation meetings with stakeholders to intimate them on development in the oil and gas industry.

The coordinator who expressed delight at the turnout, said that the meeting was an expanded stakeholders meeting that involved all the critical stakeholders, “so that all of us can align on implementation and monitoring.”

He said that the meeting would be sustained based on the directives from the NMDPRA’s Chief Executive, Ahmed Farouk, that regular engagement be held for sensitisation on issues in the industry.

Some of the participants asked questions which were adequately responded to by the state coordinator.

NDPHC, Partners to Deliver 20mw Power to Kano Industrial Area

The Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) and its development partners, the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) as well as Haier Technologies, have announced a collaboration to provide a 20mw embedded solar generation facility to support businesses in the Challawa Industrial Area, Kano.

The Managing Director of the NDPHC, Jennifer Adighije, who led a management team on a site survey and assessment of the area, disclosed that the Chairman of the NDPHC Board, Vice President Kashim Shettima, had earlier given a directive to that effect.

Others in Adighije’s entourage, who also visited the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), were the Executive Director in charge of Generation, Kassim Abdulahi, and the Executive Director of Corporate Services, Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama.

Speaking during a meeting with business owners in Challawa, Adighije described the visit as both significant and emotional, noting the critical role the industrial area plays in national revenue generation and socio-economic development, a statement by the NDPHC’s Head, Corporate Communications and External Relations, Emmanuel Ojor, noted.

“This is a very important and emotional visit. I recall that on December 7 last year, the Chairman of our Board and Vice President of Nigeria, Kashim Shettima, visited Challawa. Before he even returned to Abuja, he called and gave us a directive to show our presence here by providing an alternative source of electricity to the area.

“You may wonder why it took us from December until now. It took us a few months to come because I engaged development partners to come up with a cost effective solution that will offer affordable tariffs for the Challawa community,” Adighije added.

Adighije noted that NDPHC and the partners came up with a project framework that leverages Kano’s abundant solar potential to deliver reliable, renewable, and affordable electricity to businesses in Challawa.

She added, “I was emotional seeing businesses with the capacity to generate revenue and drive economic growth suffer losses simply due to a lack of affordable electricity. Kano Non-Indigenes Group Slams Gov Yusuf over Alleged Marginalisation

A group representing non indigenes resident in Kano State has accused the state government of marginalisation, citing neglect of their basic needs and exclusion from governance.

The Kano Non-Indigenous Youths Assembly (KNIYA), made the declaration during its first General Assembly for the year 2025 held in Kano.

In a communique signed by the group’s leader, Usman Abdullahi, stated that despite non indigenes delivering a significant bloc of votes to Governor Yusuf, they have been alienated from enjoying the dividends of democracy.

“We gave our votes to the NNPP during the last elections and true to their character, they have succeeded in alienating the non-indigenous group, most of whom are bona-fide citizens having been born in Kano.

“According to the Nigerian constitution, every citizen of the country is free to live and work anywhere within the geographical location of Nigeria and be treated equally like every other citizen.”

The communique added, “The government of Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, rather than consolidating on the progress made by previous administrations, has embarked on a retrogressive trajectory. From reckless demolitions that displaced thousands of traders and small business owners, to poor handling of state resources, lack of infrastructural development, and an alarming rise in insecurity.

“The NNPP-led administration has failed woefully on all fronts. This failure, we assert, is not just unprecedented but unmitigated. Kano State has been taken ten steps backward, and her citizens are the ultimate victims.”

The group commended the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing it as bold reforms and decisive leadership “which is gradually reshaping the nation’s economic and governance architecture.”
