NDLEA secures forfeiture of N33.6bn illicit opioids in Rivers

The Lagos State Police Command on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, continued activities marking the 2026 National Police Day with a sensitisation programme held at Ojota Motor Park, where drivers were engaged on key issues affecting public safety and national development.

The engagement comes after the command held the sanitation exercise and walkathon held on Monday 30th and Tuesday 31st of March, 2026, as part of earlier activities marking the celebration.

The sanitation exercise and walkathon was designed to promote peace, boost police visibility, and strengthen public trust and safety across the state.

In a statement issued by the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, she said the sensitisation programme formed part of activities lined up for the 2026 National Police Day, with Day Three focused on public awareness on security and social issues.

According to the command, the programme specifically targeted drivers and addressed the dangers of electoral violence, cultism, gender-based violence (GBV), and the importance of safe driving practices.

During the session, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Tijani Fatai, delivered a lecture on the Electoral Act, where he explained several electoral offences and their consequences.

He spoke on offences such as vote buying and selling, electoral violence and thuggery, ballot box snatching, destruction of election materials, impersonation, multiple voting, and the intimidation of voters, officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and security personnel. He also highlighted the illegal possession of electoral materials.

The police commissioner warned that such offences pose serious threats to the credibility of elections and the stability of Nigeria’s democracy, urging citizens, especially drivers, to obey the law and support peaceful electoral processes.

“The far-reaching consequences of these offences on the credibility of the electoral process and the nation’s democratic stability, urging citizens, particularly drivers, to uphold the rule of law and support peaceful electoral processes,” the CP said.

Also speaking at the event, Area M Commander, ACP Tokunbo Abaniwonda, sensitised participants on the dangers of cultism and urged cooperation between the public and the Police in tackling the menace.

In another presentation, the Officer-in-Charge of the Gender Unit, ACP Oluwatoyin Kazeem, educated participants on gender-based violence, explaining its forms, effects, and the importance of reporting such cases.

Similarly, the Officer-in-Charge of Motorpol 1, CSP Alli Yemisi, stressed the importance of discipline on the roads, calling on drivers to obey traffic regulations and maintain responsible behaviour while driving.

The Lagos State Police Command said the sensitisation programme is part of its broader effort to promote public awareness, strengthen community relations, and improve safety across the state.

The command restated its commitment to continuous engagement with the public as a way of building trust and ensuring a secure environment for all residents.
