A Kaduna State High Court has convicted and sentenced a man, Faruk Suleiman Ololade, for impersonation and attempted fraud.
The EFCC noted in a statement that Ololade, also known as Caesar Smith, was found guilty by Justice Jaafaru Zubairu for posing as an Australian citizen online in a bid to deceive members of the public.
He was prosecuted by the Kaduna Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on a one-count charge bordering on impersonation.
The charge reads: “That you, Faruk Suleiman Ololade (a.k.a. Mr Caesar Smith), on or about the 12th of February, 2026, in Kaduna, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, impersonated one Mr Caesar Smith (an Australian) via the Facebook platform and, in such assumed character, attempted to defraud members of the public, and you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 142 (1) of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law, 2017, and punishable under the same law.”
The defendant pleaded guilty to the charge.
Following his plea, the prosecution counsel, Moses Arumemi, urged the court to convict and sentence him accordingly.
Delivering judgment, Justice Zubairu found him guilty and sentenced him to three years’ imprisonment. The court, however, gave him an option of a N300,000 fine.
In addition, the judge ordered that his Redmi 15C mobile phone, identified as the tool used in carrying out the crime, be forfeited to the Federal Government.
The EFCC said the convict was arrested after receiving credible intelligence on the activities of suspected internet fraudsters operating around Turaki Signboard in the Agwa area of Kaduna State.
