Two nurses have been arrested following the death of two sisters at the General Hospital in Zuru, Kebbi State. The two girls, aged six and three, died on March 18 after reportedly receiving incorrect injections during treatment.
The suspects are currently held in police custody in Birnin Kebbi as investigation continues to determine the exact cause of deaths.
In response, the Kebbi State Government has established a nine-member panel of inquiry chaired by the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Alhaji Yakubu Ahmed.
The panel has begun hearings in Zuru, questioning medical personnel including the Principal Medical Officer, Dr. Thomas Gode, and Medical Officer, Dr. Mohammed Fakai, along with nurses who were on duty at the time. The children’s father, Ibrahim Abdullahi Shuni, and other family members also provided accounts of the events.
During the panel hearings, hospital staff highlighted gaps in communication among personnel as a factor that may have contributed to the tragedy, signaling the need for urgent reforms to prevent future incidents.
The state government also donated N10 million to the bereaved family.
Speaking at the Emir’s Palace in Zuru, Alhaji Ahmed said the contribution was meant to help the family manage the emotional trauma of their loss. “No sum of money can replace the lives lost, but we hope this support shows that the family has not been abandoned,” he said.
The Emir of Zuru, Alhaji Mohammed Sanusi Mikailu Sami, urged the family to remain resilient and see the incident as part of God’s will. He also called on healthcare workers to maintain high professional standards. “Negligence that risks human lives is unacceptable. Continuous training is essential for all health personnel,” he said.
Representing the family, Barrister Garba Shehu thanked the state government for its intervention and for ensuring a thorough investigation.
