Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has launched the construction of a drainage canal in the Wurukum area of Makurdi to address the perennial flooding challenges in the state capital.
The groundbreaking ceremony took place on Thursday in Wurukum, Makurdi.
The project involves the construction of a drainage canal stretching from the Wurukum Market axis, passing between Benue Links Park and the Interdenominational Mission House, and ultimately channeling water directly into the River Benue. The project is designed to serve as a critical flood-control measure upon completion.
The canal will divert excess rainwater and surface runoff from the densely populated Wurukum area, which is notorious for severe flooding during the rainy season.
The event attracted residents, community leaders, and onlookers who gathered to witness the commencement of work.
Heavy machinery, including excavators and bulldozers, was deployed at the site, with dump trucks already transporting earth and construction materials as crews began clearing and excavation.
A government official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the new canal is expected to ease flooding by providing a direct and controlled outflow of water into the River Benue. He described the project as a landmark intervention reflecting Governor

Residents expressed optimism that the completion of the canal would bring lasting relief to thousands of households and businesses that have endured repeated flood-related hardships.
The launch of the Wurukum Canal has been widely welcomed as a positive step in ongoing efforts to make Makurdi more resilient to climate-related challenges and seasonal flooding.
