The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja has ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register the Liberation People’s Party (LPP) as a political party and issue it a certificate of registration within 30 days.
The appellate court overturned an earlier decision of the Federal High Court, Abuja, which had declined the reliefs sought by the political association.
In a landmark judgment delivered on Tuesday, a three-member panel of justices unanimously held that the LPP was deemed duly registered under Section 75(4) of the Electoral Act, 2022, effective from December 2025, being 60 days after the party submitted its application to INEC.
The panel, comprising Justices Banjoko, Abang, and Oyewunmi, ruled in favour of the party and awarded N5 million in damages against INEC, in addition to N500,000 as the cost of litigation.
The court’s decision followed an appeal filed by the LPP challenging the judgment of the Federal High Court presided over by Justice B.F.M. Nyako.
According to the party, it was among 14 political associations prequalified by INEC from a total of 171 applicants seeking registration in 2025.
The LPP stated that after paying the mandatory administrative fee of N2 million, it was issued an access code with a 30-day validity period to enable it to upload the required registration documents on INEC’s online portal.
However, the party alleged that INEC blocked its access to the portal before the expiration of the deadline, thereby preventing it from completing the registration process.
In its judgment, the Court of Appeal held that the circumstances of the case entitled the party to be regarded as duly registered in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act.
Reacting to the judgment, lead counsel to the LPP, Barrister John Nwobodo, described the ruling as a triumph for democracy, justice, and the rule of law.
“We appreciate the Justices of the Court of Appeal for upholding justice and reaffirming the judiciary as the last hope of the common man,” he said.
Nwobodo also assured Nigerians that the party would remain committed to democratic values, inclusiveness, and broader political participation.
A Nigerian United States citizen and health specialist, Kelvin Onyiaeze,has announced plans to file a N1 billion defamation suit against social commentator Martins Otse, known as VeryDarkMan.
Onyiaeze disclosed this in a briefing in Abuja on Friday.
Recall that in a viral video, VeryDarkMan alleged that Onyiaeze is a land grabber.
However, reacting, Onyiaeze described VeryDarkMan’s claims as malicious and an attempt to tarnish his image.
He said VeryDarkMan’s claim is a ‘total falsehood.’
“The allegations contained in the viral video are a total falsehood and a coordinated attempt at character assassination. Mr. Kelvin Onyiaeze is a law-abiding United States citizen and a distinguished healthcare specialist.
“The attempt to weaponize social media to destroy the livelihood of an international healthcare professional is not only wicked but a threat to the safety of the diaspora community,” Onyiaeze said.
He noted that VeryDarkMan’s action is a breach of Nigeria’s cybersecurity acts and his data privacy.
“We wish to remind the public and the authorities that the digital space is not a lawless vacuum. The actions of “VeryDarkMan” constitute a direct violation specifically regarding cyberstalking, bullying, and the distribution of racist contravention of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act 2015 and xenophobic material aimed at causing fear and reputational harm,” he said.
He urged the Nigerian Police and Department of State Security Services to take action against VeryDarkMan.
“We hereby urge the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Office of the Attorney General to take immediate punitive measures against Martins Otse (VeryDarkMan). The law must take its course to serve as a deterrent to digital terrorists who use their platforms to blackmail and de-market hardworking citizens for “clout” or financial gain.
“Our legal team, led by Barrister Abubarka Orumah, has been instructed to proceed with a $1 billion libel and defamation suit,” he said.
