Your Days are Numbered, Military Tells Notorious Bandit Leader, Bello Turji

Linus Aleke in Abuja

The High Command of the Nigerian military yesterday told the notorious bandit leader, Bello Turji, to prepare to meet his maker, as his days are already numbered.

The military also stressed that troops deployed to various operational theatres are still hunting down high-value terrorist leaders across all theatres.

The Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Markus Kangye, said this while fielding questions from reporters during the bi-weekly briefing at the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) in Abuja.

Responding to questions on whether the troops had downscaled their operations against cattle rustling and wanted bandit leaders, General Kangye said no.

According to him, “The troops are still hunting down high-value terrorist leaders. Some of them were also eliminated within the first quarter of 2025. As for Bello Turji, we will soon fix an appointment for him with his maker.”

Regarding the viral complaints about rationing food to frontline troops, the director stated that those pushing this narrative aim to discredit the military and dampen troop morale.

He said: “The issue of troops not being well taken care of on the frontline is not true. I can also authoritatively tell you that the services headquarters and the Nigerian Armed Forces are taking good care of the sick and wounded.”

“Some of those who require medical evacuation abroad are taken abroad for medical treatment, fully funded by the military. Some went to Egypt, Turkey, and India, and as we speak, some are still there receiving medical attention.”

“Also, in 2024, the Nigerian Army allocated free houses to our wounded-in-action soldiers in an estate built by the Nigerian Army in Idu, Abuja.

“So, when you talk about the welfare of soldiers, don’t listen to narratives that are made to discredit the efforts of the Nigerian Armed Forces. We say no to such narratives.”

He also revealed that troops from Operation Delta Safe uncovered and dismantled 122 illegal refining sites in the first quarter of 2025.

He said: “During the quarter, Operation Delta Safe foiled oil theft worth over N7 billion. The breakdown indicates 6,290,437 litres of stolen crude oil, 1,319,350 litres of illegally refined AGO, 6,130 litres of DPK and 4,545 litres of PMS.

“Additionally, troops discovered and destroyed 257 crude oil cooking ovens, 128 dugout pits, 192 boats, 138 storage tanks, 236 drums and 122 illegal refining sites. Other items recovered include barges, speedboats, pumping machines, drilling machines and over 90 vehicles.”

New Fictional Novel Exposes Dark Realities of Power, Corruption

    Kuni Tyessi in Abuja

A novel, ‘Impunity’ which speaks to the realities of power, oppression, corruption and other social vices as well as the quest for justice has found its way into the Nigerian literary scene.

Author of the literary piece, Faith Ose Ebhodaghe said in the tradition of not writing in a vacuum, she has gathered subject matter and themes from the Nigerian socio-cultural, economic and political space to make her contributions in the fictional novel which is a searing and suspense-filled exploration of unchecked power, survival, and the search for justice.

Ebhodaghe who spoke yesterday in Abuja, said her storytelling ability was influenced by authors like Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Dan Brown and is hopeful that her work will reach the targeted audience and make societal corrections where applicable.

The novel which has sparked conversations about corruption, justice, and the price for ambition, with early readers calling it a brutally honest, thought-provoking read, has a setting in Port Harcourt and with a 14-year-old boy as protagonist.

According to her, “It is set against the backdrop of contemporary Nigeria and features Aza Kio Briggs, a 14-year-old boy whose life is shaped by a system where power is wielded without consequence.

“The thrilling and emotionally charged tale follows the character of Aza over a four-decade timeline, delving into the depths of power, corruption, and resilience.

“The novel masterfully blends suspense, politics, and human drama that speaks to the realities of oppression and the fight for justice, thereby blending political intrigue and supernatural elements,” she said.

She further revealed that the work is now available on Amazon and Selar, and is set to challenge perceptions and ignite discussions about the realities of power in Nigeria and beyond.

Entrepreneurs Development: NDDC Boost Niger Delta Chamber of Commerce with N10bn

    Blessing Ibunge in Port Harcourt

The Niger Delta Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Trade, Mines and Agriculture (NDCCITMA) has received a whooping sum of N10 billion from the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to commence its entrepreneurs’ development programme.

This was disclosed yesterday, at the inauguration of the board of directors of the NDCCITMA at NDDC’s headquarters in Port Harcourt.

Speaking, the Managing Director of NDDC, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, explained that the N10 billion is an initial deposit of the N30 billion promised by the commission to invest in the Chamber.

He said the development reaffirmed the NDDC’s commitment to the growth of commerce and trade in the region.

Ogbuku said, “During the flag-off ceremony of the sensitisation programme, I did mention that the commission will be investing N30bn in the Enterprise Development scheme to be managed by NDCCITMA to support the entrepreneurs in our region from the NANO, Micro and Small-scale level.

“I am here to reaffirm that promise. Today, we shall make good the promise by releasing N10bn to the NDCCITMA designated bank for Immediate commencement of the entrepreneur’s development programme.”

Ogbuku assured of the commission’s commitment to partnering NDCCITMA to achieve its set goals.

“We look forward to their partnering with NDCCITMA for the growth of the economies of the states and the region at large. I will also like to appreciate all the state reps on the NDDC board for their full support, it is good that this is happening in your own time on the board of NDDC.

“NDCCITMA and the commission will work out the operational dynamics for the programme. The commission has approved 5000 businesses to kick-start this initiative. We assure you that NDDC is poised to grow the region in commerce and trade through encouraging everyone to

    part of the NDCCITMA activities.”

The MD, however, directed all contractors and vendors in the NDDC to ensure they register with the NDCCITMA by July 31, 2025.

“The commission will also like to advise all current and intending vendors in NDDC to register with NDCCITMA as doing so will be an added advantage for consideration of possible and continued patronage by the commission. From today to July 31st every NDDC contractor must be duly registered with the NDCCITMA,” Ogbuku noted.

In his remarks, the Board chairman, NDCCITMA, Idaere Ogan, affirmed the Chambers’ readiness to work with NDDC to achieve its vision of transforming the Niger Delta region.

He said, “We align fully with the NDDC’s vision to transform the Niger Delta into a region that is economically prosperous, socially stable, ecologically regenerative and politically principled.

“The NDCCITMA is a tool in achieving this transformation. Our purpose is clear, to serve as a catalyst for development across all tiers of the economy from nano and micro businesses to medium size enterprises and large industries.

“This platform will facilitate job creation, skills development, invocation, export growth and productive partnerships,” Ogan added.
