Hot SourceThe Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has been granted bail in the sum of GHC1 million with two sureties after being processed by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in connection with galamsey-related activities.
Wontumi will appear before the High Court in Accra today, 7 October 2025, to face three mining-related charges, including mining without a licence.
The legal action follows a directive from the Attorney-General’s Office, which finalised and signed the charges ahead of his engagement with the CID.
After the session, Wontumi’s legal team, led by Andy Appiah-Kubi, confirmed that the bail conditions had been met and that the NPP Regional Chairman would cooperate fully with the prosecuting authorities.
The charges stem from illegal mining operations linked to Akonta Mining Limited, a company connected to Wontumi.
The Attorney-General, Dr Dominic Ayine, had earlier warned that Wontumi would be arrested if he failed to present himself to the CID.
