Wike Blasts Buratai, Insists Lt. Yerima Carried out Illegal Order

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has fired a pot shot at former Chief of Army Staff Gen Tukur Yusuf Buratai (Rtd) for misconstruing his clash on Tuesday with Naval officers, led by Lt AM Yerima as a threat to national security and a slight on the authority of President Bola Tinubu.

Wike, who addressed the media at Life Camp, blasted Buratai, for asking him to apologise to Lt. Yerima for the incident which happened in Gaduwa District of Abuja, saying the former Army chief could not educate him about decency.

The minister also did not spare Yarima for his role in the altercation that escalated over the disputed parcel of land that belonged to former Naval Chief of Staff Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo, which the FCT Administration said was illegal.

He accused the naval officer of accepting an illegal order in stark contravention of the rule of law.

“I read what one former Chief of Army Staff wrote. He cannot tell me of decency and this he can’t teach me. This was the same man who (allegedly) directed his GOC to rig election, my election in 2019. He couldn’t rig me. He lost.

“He told his GOC to kill me and I could not be killed. He became an agent in APC primaries to one of APC’s presidential aspirants. Look at the rank becoming a polling agent. He is the one commenting that the minister did this and that. I have never seen people like this.

“I have no regrets for my political opponents. I will continue to make them have sleepless nights. Whether you are in PDP, whether you are in APC, whether you are in ADC, it is not my business. I have no regrets supporting President Tinubu and I have never hidden my intention and I will continue to do what is right. So, if you like write anything you want to write, in as much as I know, I am standing by the side of the law. If you like, bring every ethnicity coloration, it is your business”.

On the contrary, Wike blamed Lt. Yerima for the part in shoving by insisting he acted within the confines of his authority as a minister representing the President and the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces.

He said: “I mean, anybody should know. Yes, you are a young man and you are a commissioned officer. Mr man, I am a minister and I’m representing Mr. President. That alone should have given you that decorum. But no, no you chose to challenge the minister representing the president.

“And then you think that I am not a human being, I have no emotions. You are carrying out an illegal job. When people say, Order, do you need to carry out an illegal order? When you are an officer you are doing something illegal. Even if it’s a legal order given to you, that job you are doing is illegal. I went there as an institution not a private individual, they arrested our officials, I say how? I went there by myself and I said no, no, no”.

    Former President of the Senate, Senator Ahmad Lawan, has charged Nigerians not to disrespect personnel of the country’s armed forces, saying their sacrifices demand consistent national support and appreciation.
    Lawan, who spoke to newsmen on Thursday at the State House after a closed-door meeting with President Bola Tinubu, said Nigeria’s military personnel “give their lives for the sake of this country” and must be treated with utmost respect.
    His remarks came in the wake of public debate over Tuesday’s altercation between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and a naval officer, Lt. A.M. Yerima, over an alleged land dispute in Abuja.
    Applauding the military for its service, the President of the Nineth Senate, who chairs the Senate Committee on Defence, said he has first hand knowledge of the dedication and sacrifice of security personnel.
    Said he: “I know how committed our armed forces are. I know how they give their lives for the sake of this country. They deserve our respect, they deserve our support at all times. This administration is investing heavily in the armed forces and other security agencies, and Nigerians, regardless of status, must respect them”.
    Commenting on the delayed transmission of the 2026 Appropriation Bill to the National Assembly, Lawan said there was “no cause for alarm,” noting that both arms of government understand the urgency of passing the budget early.
    According to him: “Time is of essence when it comes to the national budget. I am sure the executive is working around the clock to finalise the estimates. Once it is presented, we will process, scrutinise and pass it without delay”.
    The ranking Senator said he was at the State House to commend President Tinubu for what he described as bold and courageous reforms aimed at stabilising the economy and strengthening national security.
    “Mr. President, in the last two years, has taken profound steps to reposition the economy and significantly increase investments in the security sector. Our economy has stabilised, we are heading in the right direction, and there is growth—what remains is to make that growth inclusive,” he said.
    In acknowledging lingering security challenges facing the country, the Yobe Senator expressed optimism that the administration’s massive investments in defence would yield positive results.
    Lawan, a critical stakeholder in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), pledged full support for the Tinubu administration, noting that constructive engagement—not public criticism—remains his preferred approach.
    “If I can sit with my President and offer advice, why should I criticise him publicly? It is important to counsel our leader, support him, and ensure the administration delivers what Nigerians need. President Tinubu is a listening leader, and where the public raises legitimate concerns, he always reconsiders”, he said.
    The Senator said he would continue to advocate for his constituency and the nation, adding that ensuring the success of the administration is the responsibility of every loyal party member and public office holder.

    The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has assured telecoms consumers in  Nigeria of an accessible, resilient and safe digital space in the nation’s digital economy.

    The Executive Commissioner, Stakeholders Management (ECSM), Rimini Makama, gave the assurance at the NCC Digital Economy Sensitisation Forum, with the theme ‘Leaving No One Behind: Digital Access, Equity, and Empowerment.’

    The event was organised by the NCC in Abuja to create cybersecurity awareness by bringing all major stakeholders in the digital economy ecosystem together.

    Makama, who was represented by Head Consumer Information and Education, Olasumbo Olawaiye, said: “We recognise that without access, there can be no opportunity. Hence, the commission remains committed to ensuring that Nigeria’s national telecommunications infrastructure is resilient, accessible and secure.

    “Digital empowerment must be inclusive. Without inclusion and equity, the benefits of the digital economy will remain unevenly distributed.

    “The commission, through its Universal Service Provision Fund (USPF) and other initiatives, is actively extending digital opportunities to the unserved, underserved, physically challenged and vulnerable groups through several impactful programmes.”

    The publicity expert for the Association of Telecommunivations Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), Dr. Nihinlola Fefa, said ATCON has been an advocate of cyber security awareness and sensitisation over the years.

    “ATCON has actually been a very key stakeholder in the CT and telecom industry. And we have always advocated for cyber security awareness, and sensitisation across the industries, and everyone that is actually part of this ecosystem.

    “We have been giving our own input over the years. We interface with all the telecom companies. We do a lot of studies, and we also give our contributions in so many ways,” she said.

    Speaking on the progress made by the government in the area of cyber security, she said: “if you look at it from the government side, the NCC, the USPF, Nigeria Data Protection Commission, you can hear some of the initiatives they have deployed over the years. 

    “The minister has done quite a number of things in terms of deploying technology in rural communities.”

    According to her; although Nigeria is doing well in the area of cyber security, there is room for improvement, adding that: “We are in a good position right now.and we can do better from the government side.”

    On connectivity growth, with effective cyber security and data protection, the Head, IT and Cybersecurity, National Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Olorunisomo Isola, said: “As a commission, we ensure that we are able to roll out the necessary framework to guide both the organisations which we refer to as data controllers and processors that find themselves utilising data of data subjects.”

    Earlier, the Head, Digital Economy Department, Yahaya Abubakar, said: “Today’s event brings together a diverse mix of stakeholders, policymakers, entrepreneurs, educators, innovators and development partners; all united by one shared vision: to build a Nigeria where digital access translates into real opportunity for every citizen.”
