Walewale MP awards scholarships to 148 tertiary students

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Walewale, Mahama Tia Abdul Kabiru, has provided financial support to 148 tertiary students from his constituency under the West Mamprusi Municipality of the Northeast Region.

The initiative, financed through the MP’s common fund, is designed to ease the financial burden of parents and enable students to meet their educational expenses, including tuition and utility bills.

Initially, Dr Kabiru earmarked GHC100,000 to support about 80 to 90 students. However, due to the high volume of applications, the allocation was reviewed upwards to GHC200,000, ultimately benefitting 148 students.

The disbursement ceremony took place on Friday (3 October 2025) at the Walewale Social Centre, where beneficiaries gathered to receive the scholarships.

Addressing the event, Mahama Tia reaffirmed his dedication to education and the future of his constituents.

“Initially, we earmarked an amount of GHC100,000 to benefit some 80 to 90 students across the constituency attending or pursuing various programmes in the various tertiary institutions in the country, but following the huge number of applicants, we decided to review this amount to about GHC200,000 to be benefitting now 148 students pursuing various programmes,” he explained.

He further described the initiative as unprecedented in the constituency, adding: “Today, we unveiled the beneficiaries, and the programme we had was to effect that we announce the beneficiaries. So basically, this was what we had today, and I think that it was a very good programme and a first of its kind initiated by a member of Parliament for the Walewale constituency.”

The scholarship scheme, according to the MP, underscores his commitment to supporting human capital development and ensuring that financial challenges do not hinder access to higher education.
