Hot SourceFormer Minister for Communications and former Member of Parliament for Ablekuma West, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has formally declared her intention to contest the position of General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The announcement was made on her birthday, in a statement addressed to party members across the country and in the diaspora. In the statement, she acknowledged recent internal challenges within the NPP, describing the period as a “stormy face-off” that left the party’s base unsettled.
She said although the party had been left “bruised” with “individual and collective egos battered”, the NPP has the resilience to reorganise and emerge stronger.
“Our situation is but a necessary phase of self-introspection and diagnosis towards our journey of re-organisation,” she stated.
Ursula Owusu-Ekuful said the party must begin a rebuilding process from the polling station level through to the national structure to restore unity and confidence ahead of the 2028 general elections.
She also took aim at the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration, describing it as a “caretaker government” that “lied their way into government, amidst lofty promises”.
Calling for renewed mobilisation within the NPP, she urged members to join what she described as a “rescue mission”.
“On this day of my birth, I come to you in all humility to ask you, dear patriots, to join me on this rescue mission as your next General Secretary,” she said.
She added that by 2028, Ghanaians will be looking for change, and the NPP must be prepared to present itself as a united and credible alternative.
The former minister said unity and strategic reorganisation will be key to the party’s efforts to return to power.
“As a party, we will rise… and with unity and God on our side, as well as the collective will of the Ghanaian people, we shall overcome,” she concluded.
