Ukraine Exit Euro 2024 After Goalless Draw With Belgium

Ukraine’s hope of qualifying for the knockout stages of Euro 2024 was dashed on Wednesday after playing a goalless draw with Belgium in their final group game.

It was a game low on quality, with Ukraine unable to find the goal that would have sent them through and Belgium crashing out.

The best early chance fell to Lukaku, who was played in by a trademark defence-splitting pass from Kevin De Bruyne in the seventh minute, but as so often in this tournament, the striker fluffed his finish.

Ukraine had chances of their own too, and Roman Yaremchuk will regret not being more selfish when he was played in and, rather than shooting, opted to square to Dovbyk, but his pass was too hard and flew harmlessly across the goal.

In all, Belgium’s second-place finish sets it up with a tougher path in the knockout stage. It’ll take on France in the Round of 16 on Monday, putting itself on the side of the bracket that many view as a gauntlet.

Romania will either take on the Netherlands or Slovenia in the Round of 16 on Tuesday.

Slovakia will face either Spain or England on Sunday.
