UG fires back at Foh-Amoaning over ‘twisted’ LGBTQ+ claim

The University of Ghana has issued a forceful rebuttal to private legal practitioner Moses Foh-Amoaning after he publicly alleged that the institution had quietly amended its statutes to accommodate LGBTQ+ activities on campus.

The claim, made during an appearance on Onua FM’s Yɛn Nsempa and later amplified by GhanaWeb, accused the University Council and the Vice-Chancellor of smuggling LGBTQ+-friendly provisions into the University’s governing documents.

According to Mr. Foh-Amoaning, his coalition had sought answers from the University but received no response, a claim the institution says is simply untrue.

In a statement dated 24 November 2025, the University dismissed the allegations as baseless, sensational and damaging to the reputation of the institution and its leadership.

It stressed that the 2024 statute review did not introduce any clause that endorses or recognises LGBTQ+ activities.

Management explained that the only adjustment made during the review was the replacement of gender-specific pronouns with gender-neutral terms — a global academic practice meant to modernise institutional documents, not signal any policy shift.

The University pointed out that the singular “they” is widely used in contemporary academic, legal and even religious texts, citing the 2011 NIV Bible as an example.

UG also pushed back on Mr Foh-Amoaning’s claim of an unanswered letter. The statement noted that the University had formally responded on 10 November 2025, clarifying the nature of the pronoun changes and reaffirming that no new provisions related to LGBTQ+ matters had been introduced.

Management condemned what it described as a needless personal attack on the Vice-Chancellor, stressing that no Vice-Chancellor has the power to alter statutes on their own authority. The University said attempts to drag her into a manufactured controversy were in bad faith and unacceptable.

UG is demanding an immediate retraction and a public apology from Mr Foh-Amoaning. It warned that if the allegations are not withdrawn, the University will take legal action to protect its integrity and that of its leadership.

The statement also called out GhanaWeb, Onua FM and other media outlets for amplifying unverified claims without seeking clarification from the University’s Public Affairs Directorate.

It urged greater responsibility when reporting on sensitive institutional matters, cautioning that misinformation erodes public trust.

Despite the uproar, the University says it remains focused on its core mandate of academic excellence, ethical governance and creating a safe, lawful environment for its community — and will not be sidetracked by what it views as unfounded accusations.
