The 6 Division of the Nigerian Army has dismantled 21 illegal oil refineries and arrested 11 suspected oil thieves in Niger Delta on Sunday.
They also recovered over 190,000 litres of stolen petroleum products in the region.
The Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations in the Division, Lt. Col. Jonah Danjuma, said in a statement on Sunday night that the operation was a bold move to curb oil theft and bolster Nigeria’s struggling oil production.
The operations conducted in collaboration with other security agencies signal a renewed determination to dismantle criminal enterprises that have long plagued Nigeria’s oil sector.
According to Danjuma, the intensified operations were carried out between December 30, 2024, and January 5, targeting illegal refining hubs in Bayelsa, Rivers, and surrounding states.

He said: “From Oando wellheads in Benkrukru to illegal connections near Omoku in Rivers State, troops have left no stone unturned in dismantling networks of oil thieves. Over 190,000 litres of stolen petroleum products were recovered, 31 boats used for transporting stolen crude were destroyed, and 11 suspects apprehended.
“In Bayelsa State’s Okordia and Nembe LGAs, operations led to the destruction of multiple illegal refining sites and the recovery of over 86,500 litres of stolen crude and refined products. Troops also discovered suction machines and locally made equipment used in the illicit trade.
“In Rivers State, around Omoku, oil thieves abandoned four boats carrying over 22,000 litres of stolen products when confronted by soldiers.
“Further operations at the Obiafu Oil Field and Mgbede areas saw the destruction of wooden boats, dugout pits, and tanks containing stolen petroleum. “
