Hot SourceThe former Chief Justice, Gertrude Araba Sackey Torkornoo, has filed an application for judicial review seeking to stop the potential appointment of Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as the new Chief Justice.
The application, filed on Thursday, 16 October 2025, through her lawyer Kwabena Adu-Kusi, challenges the reasoning behind her removal from office and the subsequent nomination of Baffoe-Bonnie.
Torkornoo’s legal action aims to quash the proceedings and recommendations of the Justice Pwamang-led committee, which investigated her conduct and led to her dismissal. She argues that her removal was “illogical and irrational.”
Central to her challenge are two reports – one from a committee chaired by Justice Dr Owusu-Dapaa and another from the National Signals Bureau. Both reports allegedly identify Francis Baiden, a Judicial Service staff member in charge of the e-Justice system, as the prime suspect in the tampering of judicial documents related to the Gyakye Quayson case.
Torkornoo contends that it is unfair she was removed from office for transferring Baiden, given the evidence of his involvement, while similar transfer decisions made by Baffoe-Bonnie during his tenure as Acting Chief Justice were not questioned.
She is therefore challenging both the committee’s reasoning and the president’s reliance on its recommendation for her removal.
Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie was nominated by President John Dramani Mahama following Torkornoo’s removal, which was based on a constitutional inquiry that established misconduct on her part.
