Tinubu Mourns Ex-IG Arase

. .Condoles Catholic faithful over demise of ex-Bishop of Nsukka diocese, Francis Okobo

President Bola Tinubu has commiserated with the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) over the demise of the 18th indigenous Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Solomon Ehigiator Arase, aged 69.
Arase’s reforms as IGP and later as Chairman of the Police Service Commission brought lasting changes to the force.
The President, in a release issued by his Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, commiserated with the family, friends and associates of the highly resourceful officer.
President Tinubu acknowledged the dedication of the former IGP to enhancing security in the country, through initiatives such as the Intelligence Response Team, the Complaint Response Unit, and Safer Highway Patrols.
Reflecting on Arase’s laudable service to the country, the President remarked, “Arase served the police force meritoriously from 1981 to 2016. During his career, he led tactical, operational, and intelligence units, including United Nations Peacekeeping in Namibia, the Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom, and the Principal Staff Officer to three IGPs.
“He was Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Force Intelligence Bureau (FIB), and Deputy Inspector General of Police, Force Criminal Investigation Department.
“After retirement, he continued to serve the nation in various public roles, including as Chairman of the Police Service Commission and as head of the Task Force on implementing the Edo State Anti-Community Development Association Law.
“His expertise extended to consultancy roles with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), the European Centre for Electoral Support, the Human Rights Centre at the University of Oslo, and as a member of the Committee on Prevention of Torture in Geneva, Switzerland.
“I pray for the peaceful repose of the soul of this dedicated security expert, whose experience and contributions will be deeply missed by our nation”.
Also, President Tinubu expressed sadness over the passing of Bishop Francis Emmanuel Okobo, the pioneer Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Nsukka, aged 88.
“As the pioneer Catholic Bishop of the Nsukka Diocese, Bishop Okobo provided uncommon leadership and direction to the Catholic faithful, leading to the Church’s exponential growth in Nsukka Diocese.
“As a priest and worker in God’s Vineyard, he lived an exemplary and impactful life, building the Church and guiding countless souls with love and wisdom,” the President said.
President Tinubu commiserated with Bishop Okobo’s family, the Catholic faithful of Nsukka Diocese, and the people and government of Enugu State on the demise of this shepherd of the flock.
He prayed for the peaceful repose of the revered clergyman’s soul.
Bishop Okobo was ordained to the Priesthood in 1966 at 29 and served as a priest for 54 years.
Following his Episcopal Ordination in 1991, he served as the Local Ordinary of the Nsukka Diocese for 34 years.

    Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Edet Otu, has described the formal return of the Tinapa Business and Leisure Resort to the state government as “a battle fought and won for all Cross Riverians.”

    Governor Otu, who stated this  at the handover ceremony in Calabar,  noted that  the recovery of Tinapa symbolised not just the reclaiming of a major asset but the revival of a vision that once placed Cross River on the global economic map.

    “The return of Tinapa is not merely an event; it is a rebirth, the triumph of faith, patience and resilience,” he said.

    Recalling its conception under former Governor Donald Duke, Otu said Tinapa once showcased the state’s capacity for bold, investment-driven development. He assured that his administration, under the People First Agenda, would reposition the Free Zone as a hub for trade, tourism and creative enterprise.

    “We are breathing new life into Tinapa, not as a relic of abandoned ambition but as a living symbol of Cross River’s resilience,” he stated.

    The governor disclosed that the state is already engaging credible investors and partners to transform the facility into a vibrant centre of commerce and job creation, operating under a transparent and accountable management structure.

    “This moment is a collective victory — for our past leaders whose dreams gave it birth, for the government that fought to reclaim it, and for the future generations who will inherit its promise. Together, we shall turn this symbol of struggle into a testament of triumph,” Governor Otu said.

    He also extended appreciation to the federal government and relevant agencies for their cooperation in the transition process, commending all stakeholders who worked behind the scenes to make the return possible.

    Governor Otu expressed hope and determination, reaffirming that the rebirth of Tinapa would mark the beginning of a new economic dawn for Cross River State.

    He said: “We are a people of faith and courage. Tinapa is once again ours — and under our watch, it shall flourish. Let the world know that Cross River has reclaimed her pride, and from this soil, we shall build the future we have always dreamed of.”

    Governor Otu recalled that prior to the establishment of Tinapa in 2007, Cross River State had little by way of landmark projects that drew national and international attention. He noted that the conception of Tinapa by former Governor Donald Duke marked a turning point in the state’s developmental trajectory, earning it global recognition as a forward-looking and investment-friendly destination.

    “Then, like a dream that triumphed over doubt and circumstance, Tinapa emerged — radiant, ambitious, visionary — and became the spark that changed the narrative of our state forever,” he said. “By its conception, Tinapa redefined how the world saw us, lifting Cross River from the shadows into the global spotlight.”

    Also speaking, the Commissioner for Finance, Dr. Mike Odere, said the handover represents a revival of what many thought was lost forever.

    “It means pride, it means reawakening, it means renewed hope,” Odere said, adding that with full ownership now restored, the government would be free to attract investors and reposition the facility for maximum economic impact.

    In his remarks, the Executive Director of AMCON, Mr. Shola Lamide, said the corporation acquired the Tinapa asset in 2011 but struggled to attract private investors to revive the project. He expressed satisfaction that the facility has now been fully handed back to Cross River State, describing the resolution as “a win for both AMCON and the people of Cross River.”

    Ugwuto Community in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State has faulted claims by Enpower Energy Limited that there was a tripartite agreement on the disputed land between the state government, Enpower Energy Limited and Oildata Integrated Construction Company, which they claimed was signed in 2009.

    Recall that the community had protested over allegations of land grabbing, accusing the company of using security forces to intimidate community members who dared to raise their voices.

    Reacting to the allegations, through its legal representative, Ricky Agu, the company said that in the agreement, the Enugu State government intends to develop a private public sector partnership for the attraction of investment into Enugu.

    However, addressing journalists yesterday in Enugu, a leader in the community, Emmanuel Agu, said that there was no such agreement, insisting that the community does not know the identities of Enpower and Oildata Integrated Construction Company.

    “The agreement is only a figment of Lawyer Agu’s imagination. If government wants to acquire land there is a process,” he said.

    The community also denied the allegation that the government had acquired the land and used it as its equity to attract investments into the state.

    “The claim by  Agu that when operations start on the land that the joint venture will pay to the community 5 percent or whatever equity is due them is a scam,” he said adding that “Ugwuto community is not a co-owner of Enpower.”

    Speaking further, he said: “Let us make it clear; we do not have issues with the state government. The Enpower Energy and Oildata integrated Construction Company are companies owned by Emeka Ene from Umuabi Udi, and we are calling on Governor Peter Mbah to intervene to save us from these scammers.”
