The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has called for a comprehensive evolution of the United Nations to ensure the global body remains capable of addressing the complex and interconnected challenges of the 21st century.
Speaking at the Ghana High-Level Dialogue in commemoration of the UN@80, held under the theme: “Exploring the Future of Multilateralism and Sustainable Development and Financing in a Fragmented World,” the Minister emphasized that the time had come for the UN to reform, adapt and respond more effectively to global realities.
“The UN must evolve into a more agile, representative and responsive institution , one that is capable of addressing 21st century realities while remaining anchored in its founding ideals,” Ablakwa stated.
He underscored that in an era marked by deepening geopolitical tensions, climate emergencies, inequality and global instability, a renewed commitment to multilateralism was more important than ever.
“The answer to today’s challenges lies not in the retreat from multilateralism, but in its deepening,” he added.
“We must reinforce the UN’s role as a platform for shared responsibility, cooperation and collective problem-solving”, he indicated.
Mr Ablakwa, also highlighted the urgent need for reform at the UN Security Council, describing the current structure as outdated and unrepresentative of today’s geopolitical realities.
The Security Council, according to him ,must be reformed to restore legitimacy and equity in global decision-making.
“A continent as large and significant as Africa deserves permanent representation,” he argued,
According to the Minister, inclusive and fair global governance will not only strengthen trust among nations but also ensure that the multilateral system is truly reflective of the world’s diversity and aspirations.
As Ghana hosted the dialogue marking the UN’s 80th anniversary, the minister, reiterated the nation’s continued commitment to international cooperation and sustainable development.
He called for all nations to work towards a renewed multilateralism that is people-centered, equitable and purpose-driven.
“Let this anniversary be a turning point where we recommit to a UN that is not only fit for purpose but fit for our shared future.”
