Two students of Lagos State Model Junior College, Igbonla, Epe, and their teacher narrowly escaped death after a road accident in the Onipanu area of Lagos.
The incident occurred around 6 p.m. on Tuesday, according to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the agency’s Permanent Secretary, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said the crash involved two vehicles travelling at high speed along the expressway.
He explained that the collision caused one of the vehicles to veer off its lane into the opposite carriageway, leading to significant damage to both cars.
“The Honda Accord had a single occupant, while the Suzuki Alto carried three occupants; a teacher and two students of Lagos State Model Junior College, Igbonla, Epe. LASEMA is pleased to report that no fatalities occurred and all occupants of the vehicles escaped without serious injury,” he said.
However, two of the students; Animashaun Ridwan and Ogunbamowo Michael, both in JSS 2, complained of head and eye discomfort. They were promptly attended to by emergency responders, stabilised, and given first aid before being released to their parents.
The teacher involved in the accident was identified as Mr Joseph, a Basic Technology instructor at the school.
Emergency officials confirmed that all victims were safely evacuated from the scene, while the damaged Suzuki Alto was towed off the road to prevent further incidents. Both vehicles have since been handed over to the police for further investigation.
Oke-Osanyintolu urged motorists to exercise caution on the roads, stressing the dangers associated with excessive speed.
“LASEMA urges all road users to exercise extreme caution, observe speed limits, and adhere strictly to traffic regulations at all times. Reckless driving and speeding endanger lives and could lead to serious accidents,” he said.
He further appealed to drivers to prioritise safety in order to prevent similar occurrences and safeguard lives on Lagos roads.
