Hot SourceThe Member of Parliament for Talensi, Daniel Dung Mahama, has committed GHC 60,000 towards the distribution of improved seeds to farmers ahead of the dry season, while also partnering with major mining firms to open up irrigation channels for agricultural use.
According to the Talensi National Democratic Congress (NDC) communication officer, Michael Nangena, the MP has procured high-yielding onion and pepper seeds that will be shared among farmers to enhance dry season production.
He noted that the project is part of a broader plan which includes the construction of access roads to improve farming activities in the constituency.
Nangena revealed that two major mining companies operating within the constituency have agreed to support agriculture by dredging small irrigation dams once the rains taper off.
“When the rains have subsided, they also moved to most of these small irrigation dams we have there to dredge them so that water can be made more available for people to engage in dry season farming,” he said.
He added that the MP, together with the District Chief Executive, is currently engaging the mining companies to formalise a corporate social responsibility framework to ensure consistent development benefits for communities affected by mining activities.
The mining firms have been given a three-week period to review proposals submitted to them, with the deadline now drawing close.
Beyond the dry season farming support, the Talensi MP has also distributed fertiliser to main season farmers and facilitated over 1,000 health insurance registrations for constituents. More than 250 students are expected to be supported under various educational intervention schemes.
Nangena further disclosed that the MP has created job opportunities for some youth in the area, stating that at least 10 young people received appointment letters during his recent visit, with more board-level appointments being processed discreetly.
“By and large, he’s doing well,” Nangena remarked, highlighting the MP’s regular engagement with residents despite being in his first term in Parliament.
