The Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, has mourned the demise of a former deputy governor of the state, Senator Solomon Ewuga, who died at the age of 70.
The governor described the death of Ewuga, a former FCT minister of state, as a great loss not only to the state but the country at large.
Governor Sule, in a statement he personally signed on Wednesday, said Ewuga’s death is not only a personal loss to his immediate family, the Eggon nation, but the entire state, especially considering his contributions to the political development, peace-building and nurturing of young people.
While commiserating with his family, the Eggon traditional council, associates and indeed all the people of Nasarawa State, the governor lamented the loss of political stalwart, administrator and patriot who dedicated his life to selfless service to the state and nation.
“Our state has lost a consummate grassroots politician, an astute administrator, and a true patriot who dedicated his life to the service of Nasarawa State and Nigeria at large.
“In his dealings as deputy governor, minister and senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the late Ewuga exemplified commitment, humility and uncommon courage in leadership,” Governor Sule stated.
He prayed for the repose of the soul of the former senator, who represented Nasarawa North Senatorial District during the 7th National Assembly.

Sanwo-Olu Seeks Stronger Climate Adaptation in State Plans
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State on Wednesday called for stronger action to integrate climate change adaptation into state development plans across Nigeria.
Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by the Deputy Chief of Staff, Mr Sam Egube, made the call while delivering a keynote address at the Sub-National Dialogue on Mainstreaming Climate Change Adaptation into State Development Plans.
The event, organised by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) in partnership with the Lagos State Office of Climate Change and Circular Economy (OCCCE), was held at Four Points Sheraton Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos.
The governor said Lagos, with nearly 28 million residents, remained one of the fastest-growing megacities in the world but also among the most vulnerable to climate change.
He warned that inaction could cost the state up to $29 billion, threatening infrastructure, the economy, food systems and livelihoods.
Sanwo-Olu noted that flooding was the most visible threat, with more than 1.4 million residents at risk of displacement.
“Lagos is surrounded by wetlands, lagoons and creeks, with over 40 per cent of its landmass covered by water. This geography supports commerce and biodiversity, but it also makes us highly vulnerable to rising sea levels, storm surges and coastal flooding,” he said.
He added that about 165 square kilometres of land across 14 local government areas could be submerged in severe flooding scenarios.
Sanwo-Olu also said Lagos had lost 84 per cent of its shoreline in the last 50 years, averaging a 2.6 metre yearly erosion rate.
“Protecting our coasts will require resources estimated at over N3 trillion. This highlights the urgency of partnerships and innovative financing solutions,” he said.
The governor explained that Lagos was already working through the OCCCE to integrate risk assessments into housing and infrastructure projects, restore wetlands and mangroves, strengthen drainage, and build early warning systems.
He said the state is also investing in capacity building to ensure engineers, planners and emergency managers had the right tools and data for decision-making.
Sanwo-Olu, however, stressed that climate change could not be tackled by Lagos alone.
“Climate change does not recognise state borders. Its effects ripple across regions, from agriculture in the north to energy in the middle belt and infrastructure in the south. That is why this dialogue is so important,” he said.
He urged states to share knowledge, adopt policies that integrate climate indicators into development plans, and design financing frameworks that could attract both local and international climate funds.
He also called for greater involvement of the private sector, as well as inclusive governance to ensure women, youth and vulnerable groups were carried along.
“The seas will not wait, and the storms will not rest. We must act now with purpose, and with a clear vision for a Nigeria that can thrive sustainably despite the challenges of climate change,” Sanwo-Olu said.
The governor declared the dialogue open and expressed optimism that discussions would pave the way for more resilient states and a safer nation.
Also the Country Director, GIZ Nigeria and ECOWAS, Dr Markus Wagner, said that the organisation is passionate about sustainable development plans for climate change.
“We have been in the forefront of mainstreaming climate change adaptation with our focus on Nigeria and other African countries.
“We have also explored strategies for aligning state development priorities with the Nigeria climate change act, National Adaptation plan and International Frameworks like the Paris Agreement,” he said.
Present at the event were the German Deputy Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Johannes Lehne, the stakeholders in the industry, representative of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC) led by its Director General, Mr Biodun Ogunleye.
Others were the Special Adviser to Lagos State Governor on Climate Change and Circular Economy, Mrs Titlayo Oshodi; Director General, Budget Office of the Federation, Mr Taminu Yakubu; and D-G, Nigeria’s Governors Forum, Prof. Olalekan Yinusa, among others. (NAN)
