South African arrested at Kotoka International Airport for smuggling 30kg of cannabis

The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has arrested a South African national at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) for attempting to smuggle more than 30 kilograms of cannabis into Ghana.

The suspect, who arrived on a flight from Thailand on Monday, 10 November 2025, was apprehended after an intelligence-led operation prompted NACOC officers to conduct a detailed search of his luggage.

During the inspection, officials discovered the cannabis carefully concealed in vacuum-sealed packages hidden within the passenger’s personal belongings.

In a related development, an airline official stationed at KIA was also arrested for allegedly aiding the suspect to bypass airport security procedures.

According to NACOC, preliminary investigations have uncovered evidence of a coordinated smuggling attempt involving both the foreign national and the airline staff. The two suspects are currently in custody and assisting investigators as the probe continues.

In a statement, NACOC reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy toward narcotics trafficking and pledged to strengthen airport surveillance and collaboration with international security agencies.

“Anyone found complicit in narcotic-related offences, regardless of nationality or position will face the full rigours of the law,” NACOC warned.

The Commission said the arrest underscores Ghana’s increasing vigilance against international drug syndicates as authorities intensify efforts to keep the nation’s entry points free from illicit trafficking.
