Sokoto Govt Revs Up Transportation Sector with 30 New Mass Transit Buses, E-Ticketing System

The Sokoto State Government has released 30 additional mass transit buses to enhance inter-state and intra-city transportation in the state.

The Deputy Governor, Idris Muhammed Gobir, presented the keys to the State Commissioner for Transportation, Hon. Bala Kokani.

A statement by Abubakar Bawa, the Director General, Media and Publicity, Government House, Sokot, said the new buses are part of the state government’s efforts to improve the mass transit system and reduce the hardship faced by passengers.

The buses come with an e-ticketing system, which allows passengers to book and pay for their transport fares online.

He further said the e-ticketing system will ensure transparency and accountability in the day-to-day operation of the state’s mass transit service. He urged the Ministry of Transportation to ensure effective supervision and regular maintenance of the buses, emphasizing that they were purchased with taxpayers’ money.

“The e-ticketing system will also ensure that passengers can conveniently book and pay for their transport fares online without any difficulty,” Gobir explained. “This will reduce the stress and hassle associated with manual ticketing and make our transportation system more efficient and convenient.”

The State Commissioner for Transportation, Hon. Bala Kokani, assured that the vehicles would be properly maintained. He praised Governor Ahmed Aliyu for his consistent support to the mass transit sector, which has improved the comfort and convenience of passengers.

“I want to assure His Excellency that we will protect these vehicles just as we protect our personal property,” Kokani affirmed. “We will ensure that they are properly maintained and serviced to provide safe and reliable transportation to the people of Sokoto State.”

This initiative is part of the administration’s efforts to cushion the effects of fuel subsidy removal and improve the standard of living in Sokoto State. Since its inception, the Gov. Ahmed Aliyu-led administration has procured 70 mass transit vehicles, including 50 buses and 20 Toyota Camrys.

The release of the new buses and the launch of the e-ticketing system demonstrate the state government’s commitment to providing efficient and convenient transportation services to the people of Sokoto State.

    The Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Bola Tinubu, Mr Bayo Onanuga, has dismissed as “malicious, contrived lies” a claim by US Senator Ted Cruz that Nigerian officials were ignoring the mass killing of Christians.

    Cruz had alleged that Islamist jihadists were carrying out “mass murder of Christians” in Nigeria with the complicity of state officials.

    “Officials in Nigeria are ignoring and even facilitating the mass murder of Christians by Islamist jihadists,” the senator wrote on X.

    “It’s time to hold those responsible accountable. My Nigeria Religious Freedom Accountability Act would target these officials with powerful sanctions and other tools.”

    In a riposte on the same social media platform, Onanuga said Nigeria does not have a religious war and insisted that terrorists and bandits kill without discrimination.

    “Senator, stop these malicious, contrived lies against my country. We do not have a religious war in my country,” the president’s spokesperson wrote.

    “The degraded Boko Haram terrorists operating on the fringes of Nigeria’s North-east target everyone. They attack farmers, our soldiers.

    “The bandits in the North-west kill worshippers in their mosques. Christians are not targeted. We have religious harmony in our country. Stop these malicious lies.”

    On Tuesday, President Tinubu had said allegations of religious genocide in Nigeria were unfounded, noting that the country was built on the faith and resilience of its people.

    Speaking in Owerri, the Imo State capital, the president said no religion was under threat in the country, noting that Nigerians, after 65 years of independence, have learned to appreciate their cultural and religious diversity.

    Former Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, has called on Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, to live up to his responsibility as the state’s Chief Security Officer and take decisive action to curb the worsening insecurity in the state.
    Saraki, in a statement issued yesterday by his media office and signed by Yusuph Olaniyonu, criticised the governor over a recent video in which he allegedly made “reckless and defamatory” comments linking the former Senate President to the 2018 Offa robbery incident.
    In what Saraki described as “another tragic episode in the growing wave of attacks across Kwara South and North,” bandits had killed 21 people in Oke Ode.
    According to the statement, the governor’s attempt to compare the series of bandit attacks currently ravaging several local governments to the Offa robbery incident of seven years ago reflected “either insensitivity or a lack of capacity to appreciate and process issues.”

    “It is laughable that a state governor whose people were massacred in Oke Ode waited five days before visiting the community,” the statement read.
    “Instead of focusing on security, he found time to attend a project commissioned in another state while his own people were being slaughtered.”
    Saraki accused AbdulRazaq of failing to convene regular security council meetings and urged him to expand the state’s Security Council to include first- and second-class traditional rulers for more effective community engagement in tackling insecurity.
    The statement further noted that Saraki’s public comments had at least “forced the governor to visit Oke Ode” and drawn national attention to the growing wave of kidnappings and killings in Kwara State.
    On the governor’s reference to the 2018 Offa robbery case, Saraki reiterated that the former Senate President had been cleared of any link to the incident by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation in two separate reports dated June 22 and August 23, 2018.
    “There was no evidence, directly or indirectly, linking Dr. Saraki to the Offa robbery. This was confirmed by the federal government’s own legal machinery despite their hostility toward him at the time,” Olaniyonu stated.
    The statement also accused the governor of sponsoring a fresh civil case involving some purported families of Offa robbery victims, allegedly aimed at embarrassing Saraki. It cited a press conference by members of the Offa community under the “Offa Koya, Offa Kowosi” group, as well as public statements by some victims’ relatives, distancing themselves from the political exploitation of the tragedy.
    Saraki urged Governor AbdulRazaq to stop politicising the Offa robbery and focus instead on restoring peace and stability in the state.
    “If this slanderous statement is his way of diverting attention from his failure to secure the state, then he has failed,” the statement concluded.
    The former Senate President maintained that his concern was not politics but the safety and well-being of the people, warning that the escalating violence across Kwara could define AbdulRazaq’s legacy if not urgently addressed.
