The Majority Leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Major Jack, on Friday dismissed claims that the impeachment move against Governor Sim Fubara is an ethnic matter.
Jack disclosed that the impeachment move is aimed at defending Nigeria’s constitution.
He disclosed this while addressing the press alongside some other Ijaw lawmakers in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital.
Fubara, who is of the Ijaw ethnic extraction, is facing impeachment over alleged misappropriation among another allegations.
Jack said: “There is no ethnicity. We are here to defend the Constitution of the Federal Republic in 1999 as amended. Therefore, we have urged Mr. Speaker to this house for us to sit and continue with the impeachment process, thank you.”
The lawmaker representing Okirika State Constituency in the Assembly, Linda Soumyari-Stewart, said the impeachment move is aimed at ensuring checks and balance.
“I would love to clarify that impeachment is one of the mechanisms set up in the Constitution for checks and balances.
“Impeachment is not and should not have any ethnic agenda,” she said.
