Rivers communities connected to national grid after 50 years without electricity

Thirty communities of Nkoro ethnic nationality in Opob-Nkoro Local Council of Rivers State have been connected to the national grid after 50 years without electricity

The Guardian learnt that top public leaders from the areas had, over the years, made promises to connect the people to the grid but were unable to match their words with actions.

This forced the residents to wallow in darkness and hampered their economic activities.

However, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who hails from the area, made good his own promise by connecting the people to the grid and also providing solar lights for the communities.

During a one-day summit in Port Harcourt, the people lamented that Nkoro kingdom had been a darkness-infested and sleepy domain due to the absence of electricity.

They applauded Fubara for wiping away their tears.
This was disclosed in a communique signed by 12 community leaders from the area, issued at the end of the summit, and read by Mr Calvin Alagoa, the Opu Da’a of the Royal House of Nkoro Kingdom.

The communique states: “The achievements of this administration in the past one year are obviously superlative, massive, and have meaningfully impacted the people of Rivers.”

The leaders alleged that the immediate past administration, led by Nyesom Wike, treated Nkoro kingdom with ignominy by excluding it during his eight years of administration without any single project, and neither was any son or daughter of Nkoro appointed or elected into a position of trust in Rivers State, except for a very short tenure as Special Adviser.

The people, therefore, pledged loyalty to the governor, thanking him for the appointments of their sons and daughters into offices. They also condemned persons who claimed they came from the area but were fighting the governor.
