President Mahama attends Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women in Beijing

President John Dramani Mahama has arrived in Beijing, China, together with his wife, to participate in a high-level Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women, hosted by Chinese President Xi Jinping in partnership with UN Women.

The summit, scheduled for 13 and 14 October, forms part of a renewed international effort to “renew the spirit of the Beijing Declaration and accelerate its implementation,” bringing together global leaders to mark the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations and the 30th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women, held in Beijing.

While attending the conference, President Mahama and his delegation will also hold bilateral engagements aimed at deepening cooperation between Ghana and China, with a strong focus on strengthening Sino-Ghanaian trade ties and driving new investment opportunities into priority sectors of the economy.

The President is expected to meet President Xi Jinping and hold talks with the Premier of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China, His Excellency Li Qiang. He will also engage Chinese business leaders and address a Presidential Investment Forum designed to connect Ghanaian businesses with their Chinese counterparts and potential investors.

As part of the working visit, President Mahama and his delegation will travel to Fujian Province to meet Chinese businesses with established interests in Ghana or plans to expand into the Ghanaian market. The visit aligns with government’s drive to attract strategic foreign partnerships that boost industrialisation, trade and job creation.

The delegation accompanying the President includes the Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry; officials of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre; the Free Zones Authority; and the Ghana Export Promotion Authority.

Also on the delegation are the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr Naa Momo Lartey (MP); the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa (MP); the Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Agbodza (MP); and the Deputy Minister for Finance, Thomas Ampem Nyarko (MP).

The engagements are expected to reinforce the long-standing diplomatic partnership between Accra and Beijing and promote greater cooperation in areas of mutual economic and social interest.
