The Eastern South Regional Police Command has swooped down on armed suspects in a series of operations at Akwatia, arresting ten people and retrieving nine weapons in a dramatic build-up to the upcoming by-election in the Eastern Region.
The swoops, which form part of heightened security to prevent the unlawful possession and use of firearms during the tense political exercise, netted eight pump-action guns, one locally manufactured single-barrel gun, and dozens of cartridges.
On 22 August 2025, police intercepted a vehicle near St Dominic Hospital at Akwatia. The driver, identified as Bernard Kumi Ofosu, was found with a Tulpar double-barrel pump-action gun, four AAA live cartridges, and two FTB blank cartridges. Although Ofosu produced a license for the weapon, he has been held as the exhibits undergo verification.
At the Akwatia Y-Junction snap check, police arrested suspect Joshua Amenuku after retrieving 15 live BB cartridges. A subsequent search at his residence uncovered an ADLER TULPA pump-action gun and five more live BB cartridges.
That same evening, officers at the Boadua Livingstone snap check point arrested two men — Enoch Asiedu and Chinese national, Lu Youyan — after discovering four live BB cartridges in their Toyota Hilux pick-up. The ammunition, they claimed, belonged to their employer, a man identified only as Mohammed, who is currently on the run.
The operations continued into 23 August 2025. At the Boadua Livingstone Junction, officers arrested suspect Pieterson Joseph after retrieving one ADLER TULPAR pump-action gun and a staggering 46 cartridges from his vehicle.
In yet another arrest at Staff Village Boadua, police intercepted a Toyota Tundra pick-up (registration number WR 5535-13) and retrieved three pump-action guns: one Pardus, one Hulglu Atroe, and another pump-action. Suspect Stephen Nkansah admitted to owning two of the guns and claimed the third belonged to his chief. He remains in custody as investigations deepen.
The Eastern South Regional Police Command has assured the public that these sweeps are part of intensified measures to safeguard peace before, during, and after the Akwatia by-election.
