…six suspects arrested as investigation widens
The Ghana Police Service have intercepted more than a thousand boxes of the restricted painkiller Tramadol in a major operation in the North East Region.
According to a statement issued by the Regional Police Headquarters in Nalerigu, officers working with the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) discovered 1,195 boxes of Tramadol Hydrochloride 120mg—commonly known on the streets as “Red”—concealed in a truck at Gbintiri.
The haul was seized on 18 September after police stopped and searched two trucks with registration numbers GR 1712-16 and AW 4417-14. The vehicles, loaded in Sankase in neighbouring Togo, were travelling towards Gbintiri when they were intercepted.
Police named the suspects as Alhassan Braimah, Yakubu Muntaka, Abdulai Shakur, Mumuni Iddrisu, Mumuni Yakubu and Moses Ayorik. All six are currently in custody assisting with investigations.
A search of one truck revealed the cartons of Tramadol hidden among other goods. Investigators say the consignment was intended for onward delivery to an individual in Gushegu in the Northern Region.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Robert Anabik Anmain, who signed the statement, confirmed that the exhibits have been secured for evidential purposes while efforts continue to trace other individuals linked to the consignment.
“All six suspects are in police custody assisting investigations, while efforts are underway to trace and arrest other individuals connected to the case,” the release said.
Tramadol, a strong opioid painkiller, is a prescription-only drug in Ghana but has become a common substance of abuse, prompting repeated crackdowns by law enforcement agencies. Health experts have warned of addiction and severe health risks when taken without medical supervision.
The North East Regional Police Command says the seizure underscores its commitment to curbing the trafficking of illicit pharmaceuticals across Ghana’s borders. Further updates are expected as the investigation continues.
