The Abia State Police Command has stated that a viral report claiming 488 Boko Haram members were arrested in the state is not true.
The police warned the public against spreading false information that could cause fear.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the command explained that the video circulating with the claim is not recent.
According to the police, it is an old broadcast recorded more than 11 years ago and does not reflect the current situation in Abia State.
The statement was issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police.
The police described the report as misleading and said it was intended to create panic among the public.
The statement said, “As the lead internal security agency, the command assures residents of its continued commitment to safeguarding lives and property, urging citizens to go about their lawful activities without apprehension.”
The police also urged the public to support their work by avoiding fake news and relying only on verified information.
It added, “The State Police wants the public to support its security efforts by rejecting fake news and relying only on credible and verified sources for information.”
The Commissioner of Police, Danladi Isa, warned people against spreading false information, saying it could disturb public peace and security.
He further stated that anyone found guilty of sharing false information would be arrested and prosecuted under the law, including the Criminal Code Act and the Cybercrime Act.
The police advised residents to stay alert and work together to maintain peace by rejecting misinformation.
