A 59-year-old blind man, Julius Nyikwa, has been arrested by the Niger State Police Command for allegedly raping his 10-year-old niece in the Keteren-Gwari area of Minna, the state capital.
It was gathered that the incident occurred on February 16, 2026, when the victim was lured into Nyikwa’s room, where he reportedly took advantage of her.
It was gathered that the suspect’s wife is the victim’s aunt, and they live in the same compound along with her parents as a big family.
Nyikwa was said to have repeatedly targeted the girl, luring her into his room and sexually assaulting her.
DAILY POST learnt the grandmother, who lives in the same compound, raised an alarm when she saw the victim entering Nyikwa’s room on the fateful day.
Neighbors allegedly responded quickly, and the suspect was apprehended by the police.
Decrying the development, the Project Director of Global Promoters for Community Initiatives, the implementers of the SCAPA GBV 3.0, Mr Olasukanmi Kalejaiye, described the action of the suspect as unfortunate.
He stated that they will ensure the suspect faces the law and gets sentenced appropriately.
The Niger State Police Command Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the incident and assured the public that the suspect will face justice.
According to him, “On 16th February, 2026, at about 2pm, a case of rape was received at ‘B’ Div Minna, which also indicated that a 59 years old suspected blind man, Julius Nyikwa of Keteren-Gwari Minna, raped a 10-year-old girl of the same compound in his room.”
Abiodun indicated that it was not the first time the suspect raped the minor.
“During the last encounter, the victim was seen entering the suspect’s room, and the grandmother raised an alarm, which attracted neighbours following which the suspect was arrested, ” he revealed.
The PRO further assured that the case is with the SCID for further investigations, adding that the suspect will soon be charged to court.
