The Ghana Police Service has announced temporary road closures and traffic diversions in Accra ahead of the State Funeral for the “Departed Eight,” scheduled for Friday, 15 August 2025, at the Black Star Square.
The event, an Inter-Denominational and Inter-Faith ceremony for the victims of the recent military helicopter crash, is expected to attract high-profile dignitaries, security agencies, and members of the public.
According to the directive, the following roads will be closed:
- 28th February Road from CEPS Traffic Light Intersection to Castle Road Junction
- Osu Cemetery Traffic Light on Lokko Street
- Castle Road from AU to Osu Cemetery Traffic Light
- Starlet 91 Road, closed at the Ministries Traffic Light Intersection
Motorists will be diverted through alternate routes including Salem Avenue, Oxford Street, Ajumaku Street, Liberia Road, Abdul Diouf Road, and King Hassan Roads to ease congestion.
In addition, parking at the venue will be strictly controlled. Only vehicles with approved VVIP red entry stickers will be allowed into the Black Star Square arena. Other designated parking areas include the State House Forecourt, International Conference Centre, Osu Cemetery car park, Accra Sports Stadium, Ministries area, and the Afua Sutherland Car Park, among others.
The Police have cautioned that no vehicle will be permitted to park at unauthorised spots or breach road blockades. Tow trucks will be deployed to remove abandoned or wrongly parked vehicles in and around the venue.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Grace Ansah-Akrofi, Director of Public Affairs, urged the public—particularly motorists—to take note of the arrangements, plan alternative routes, and cooperate fully with security personnel to ensure effective traffic control and the dignity of the occasion.
Friday’s State Funeral, expected to draw dignitaries from across the political spectrum, the security services, and international delegations, will mark the final farewell to eight individuals whose loss has struck a deep chord with the nation.
