The Nigeria Police Force has announced the detailed funeral plans for former Inspector-General of Police, Dr. Solomon Ehigiator Arase, who died on August 31, 2025, aged 69.

Arase, the nation’s 18th indigenous IGP, was widely praised for championing police reforms, philanthropy, and exemplary leadership during and after his tenure.

According to a statement signed by Force Public Relations Officer CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the ceremonies will begin in Abuja on September 24 with a Day of Tribute at the Nigeria Police Resource Centre, Jabi.

A requiem mass follows on September 26 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Maitama. A lying-in-state is slated for September 27 at his Abuja home before the body is moved to Benin City, Edo State.

In his hometown of Sabongida-Ora, a candlelight walk will hold on September 29. On October 2, the Edo State Judiciary and the Nigerian Bar Association will host a valedictory court session at the Edo State High Court, Benin, the same day a service of songs will take place at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Airport Road, along with a family lying-in-state.

The funeral mass is scheduled for October 3 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, followed by burial at his private residence in Benin City and a reception at the Victor Uwaifo Creative Hub. The rites will conclude with a thanksgiving mass on October 5.

Dr. Arase, who earned a PhD in law and held the national honour of CFR, was appointed Inspector-General in April 2015 and served until June 2016.

He passed away at Cedarcrest Hospital, Abuja, after a brief illness.
