There was a peaceful protest in Umuahia on Monday as youths marched around the Abia State capital to demand the release of detained leader of Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu.

The youths who were carrying placards with inscriptions such as ‘Federal government, obey court order”, ‘Tinubu restore peace and security in South East’, among others, said the protest was in solidarity with the one going on in Abuja.

The protesters marched down to the busiest area of Umuahia known as Isi Gate, and later headed to Corporative area.

The protesters were singing pro-Nnamdi Kanu songs, describing him as a man of peace.

They expressed surprise that the Federal Government announced amnesty and pardon for people who committed crimes but still refused to free Kanu.

Meanwhile, business activities were crippled in Umuahia as many shops remained closed even at 1:00 pm while markets and motor parks were deserted.

No bank opened in Umuahia and some government offices recorded low presence of workers.

Security personnel were also seen patrolling the city to maintain order, even as Niger road, Enugu road, Aba road and Uzuakoli road were deserted.
