Hot SourceThe Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria, PASAN, National Assembly chapter, has dissociated itself from a protest reportedly being planned by a group of aggrieved members within the legislature.
A group, which described itself as “concerned staff” had threatened to embark on peaceful picketing upon the resumption of the National Assembly from annual long recess over alleged unresolved welfare and constitutional issues affecting members.
In a letter, dated October 3, 2025, signed by Messrs M. Chris Odo, Yusuf Mohammed Abiola and Chinenye Peace Nda, on behalf of their colleagues and addressed to the Clerk to the National Assembly, CNA, they accused the management of intimidation and harassment of staff who have continued to demand rule-driven unionism anchored on the provisions of the PASAN Constitution, 2015.
Reacting to the development, PASAN Chairman, Comrade Sunday Sabiyyi, declared in a statement he signed and obtained on Monday that it is not involved in any way with the planned action, which was circulated on a WhatsApp platform known as “NASS FORUM.”
According to the association, the alleged unresolved staff issues raised by the aggrieved members have been largely addressed by the management of the National Assembly, but, however, added that it has already constituted a committee to look into any outstanding “grey areas,” and that discussions with management are ongoing.
“We strongly advise all PASAN members to remain at their duty posts and go about their legitimate business within the complex. We do not support or condone any form of protest or picketing that disrupts the functioning of the National Assembly,” Sabiyyi stated.
The association emphasized the importance of maintaining professionalism and preserving the image of the National Assembly, warning that unauthorised protests risk tarnishing the institution’s reputation.
PASAN, while calling on the management of the National Assembly to investigate the planned protest and take appropriate steps to prevent any disruptions, also urged it to clearly communicate with all staff, reinforcing the need for discipline and decorum within the premises.
The union reaffirmed its commitment to working collaboratively with the National Assembly management to resolve staff-related issues through proper and constructive dialogue.
