PAC orders Korle Bu acting CEO to refund GHC113,500 over judgment debts

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament has directed the Acting Chief Executive Officer of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr Yakubu Seidu Adam, to refund GHC113,500 to the state within 90 days.

The order follows two separate judgment debts the state was forced to pay due to negligence at the hospital. In one case, a patient died after being given an overdose of medication. In the other, hospital staff released the wrong body to a family, which later had to be exhumed and reburied.

PAC had earlier recommended that the funds be recovered from the responsible officers and paid into the Auditor-General’s Recoveries Account at the Bank of Ghana.

However, when asked by the committee’s ranking member, Samuel Atta-Mills, whether any steps had been taken to recover the money, Dr Adam admitted the hospital had not done so.

In response, PAC gave him 90 days to refund the full amount.

The directive underscores PAC’s insistence on accountability in the management of public institutions, especially in cases where negligence results in financial loss to the state.
