The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament has directed the University of Ghana to collaborate with the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to recover funds paid to staff who benefited from study leave but failed to return to their posts.
Appearing before the Committee on Wednesday, 5 November 2025, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, said the University has already initiated efforts to retrieve the outstanding sums, including unearned salaries totalling GHC 555,283.
“We have made some recoveries in this regard; some are fully paid, some are on payment plans, and there are a few cases where we have not made progress in contacting the individuals, for which we have sought the support of EOCO,” Professor Amfo stated.
The PAC commended the University for its efforts but urged management to speed up the recovery process and reinforce internal control systems to prevent future financial irregularities.
The Committee further advised all public institutions to ensure proper monitoring of staff on study leave to guarantee compliance with their terms of service.
