Ondo Approves Transfer of Akure Hospital to FUTA Teaching Hospital

The Ondo State Executive Council has approved the transfer of the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED) Teaching Hospital complex in Akure to the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), to serve as its College of Medicine and Teaching Hospital.

Briefing journalists after the Council meeting, presided over by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Banji Ajaka, explained that the move follows President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s approval for FUTA to establish a College of Medicine and a Teaching Hospital.

He said the Akure hospital complex will now be ceded to the federal government to serve as FUTA’s main medical sciences facility.

“The handover includes the transfer of staff infrastructure, equipment, and liabilities. All employees will be absorbed into FUTA Teaching Hospital under the Federal Government,” Ajaka stated.

The development, according to the Council, is expected to strengthen healthcare delivery in Ondo State while advancing FUTA’s ambition to become a leading centre for medical sciences in Nigeria.

Also at the press briefing, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Forestry, Leye Akinola, announced new measures approved by the Council to protect farmers from the impact of the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), which bans crops cultivated from deforested areas.

He said the government has approved agroforestry practices across selected forests, while ensuring reserved areas remain intact. Cocoa, cashew, oil palm, and rubber farmers will be permitted to continue operations under strict mapping and traceability systems.

“By December 30, 2025, any crop that cannot be traced to a mapped farm risks being rejected at the EU market. To safeguard livelihoods, the state will support farm mapping and grant farmers permits to continue operations,” Akinola added.

The Council also approved a review of tariffs across agricultural produce and timber value chains, aligning Ondo with other South-west states under the DAWN Commission framework.

On his part, the Commissioner for Information, Mr. Idowu Ajanaku, clarified that each cabinet member has been directed to nominate a road project in their respective local government areas to impact communities directly.

He stressed that the initiative is not for private or partisan interests but to ensure equitable development across the 18 local government areas.

 “These roads are outside the 2025 budgeted projects. They are supplementary interventions to touch communities and enhance connectivity,” Ajanaku added.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Hamidu Takuro, said the Council also ratified the appointment of His Royal Highness Joseph Ilésanmí as the monarch of Sosan in Akoko South-East Local Government Area.

    Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, has pledged that all ongoing projects initiated under his administration will be completed before the end of his tenure.

    The governor gave the assurance yesterday during the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of township roads in Rigasa ward, Igabi Local Government Area of the state.
    Addressing the people in Hausa Language during the flagged off, Sani said the road project would be executed without accruing debt.
    He added that contractors who complete their jobs will be paid in full.
    “This administration will not be indebted to any contractor who completes his project,” he said.
    Sani said the Rigasa Road project has been awarded to China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), a company he described as “versatile and credible”.
    He said the project will be delivered within one year, noting that 50 per cent of the contract sum has already been paid as mobilisation.
    According to the governor, the project is part of a broader plan to transform Rigasa (a suburb of Kaduna metropolis) into a modern township with quality infrastructure and essential social amenities
    “This is not just about breakingground. It is about rewarding hard work. It is about opening up opportunities for the hardworking people of Igabi Local Government.
    “Rigasa is one of the largest and most populous wards in Nigeria. It is populated by the urban poor. It has suffered neglect for so long. Its infrastructure deficit is worrisome,” the governor said.
    The governor noted that despite its strategic location and proximity to the city centre, Rigasa had faced years of infrastructural neglect.
    He recalled the overwhelming electoral support his campaign received from the area during the 2023 governorship election, noting that 32.06 per cent of the total votes from Igabi LGA came from Rigasa.
    “For this, I remain eternally grateful to you,” he added.
    Sani said the road project will directly benefit thousands of households, especially those who contribute to the state’s economy through farming, trade, and public service.
    He said, “In Igabi LGA lies a large chunk of people who support us through their daily sacrifices as farmers, civil servants, businessmen and women.
    “Through their sacrifices, they contribute significantly to our economy as well as our GDP. Investing, therefore, in roads like these will directly improve the livelihoods of thousands of households.”
    The governor also performed the groundbreaking for the reconstruction of Zango Road in Tudun Wada ward, Kaduna South LGA.
    Sani said the project holds personal significance due to his background as a former student of Kaduna Polytechnic, located in the area.
    “I have an emotional attachment to this area because I am a product of Kaduna Polytechnic.
    “I understand and share in the pains of the inhabitants of this area who have suffered neglect for decades.
    There is very little road infrastructure in this area.
    “The few existing ones are dilapidated. This area is populated by the urban poor who are making huge contributions to the development of our dear state.
    “Today is the beginning of good things for Zango and other parts of Tudun Wada,” Sani said.
    He noted the importance of the Zango Road, which connects multiple institutions and markets in the area.
    “This road is hugely significant because it passes through several key establishments like Zango Cattle Market, Animal Feed Stores, Sheikh Abubakar Gumi College, Islamic Medical Foundation, and School of Health Technology, as well as its proximity to the Kaduna City Centre and link to the Nnamdi Azikiwe Western By-Pass,” he said.
    Sani also highlighted progress made in the road sector since he took office, particularly under the state’s Rural Revitalisation Agenda.
    He said, “Under our Rural Revitalisation Agenda, we flagged off the construction of 85 roads covering 785km in the first phase, with 44 already completed and the rest nearing completion.
    “Under the second phase, we are delivering over 50 more roads and bridges totalling 550km.”

    Former presidential aide, cz, Laolu Akande, has faulted the Senate leadership for refusing to allow Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to resume legislative duties despite completing a six-month suspension.

    Speaking on his ‘My Take’ segment of Inside Sources with Laolu Akande on national television, yesterday, Akande described the move as “simply outrageous,” warning that the issue had now shifted from a dispute between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Natasha to a direct assault on the Senate’s role as a symbol of democracy.

    “After the upper chamber of the National Assembly illegally suspended one of its own members for six months, the Red Chamber has now said even after the expiration of the six months, the Senator cannot resume work. This is simply outrageous,” Akande said.

    He argued that the continued denial of Natasha’s mandate represented “a desecration of democracy,” insisting that no group of senators had the constitutional authority to withhold the will of the electorate.

    “What is now a certain desecration,” he declared, “is the continued denial of the mandate of an elected Senator by the Nigerian Senate, preventing the Senator from doing what she was elected for. It is an aberration and it is totally unknown to democracy anywhere.

    ”The people cannot elect a representative and a group of Senators decide to prevent such a person from performing a duly delivered mandate. It is wrong.”

    Akande dismissed the defence that the Senate’s internal rule book permits such disciplinary measures, stressing that the powers of parliament must always bow to the superior authority of the electorate.

    “That rule book gets its powers from among the Senators themselves,” he explained. “But there is a power of the electorate which is and must remain superior. Where is the power to subvert the will of the Kogi people?” He stated.

    Young Education Advocate;, Chantel Adenowo Secures Scholarships for Orphaned Siblings

    Two siblings, Greatness Raymond (13) and Chidinma Raymond (10), who recently lost both parents within the same month, have been offered full scholarships through the intervention of 11- year-old Chantel Princess Adenowo, founder of the Chantel Adenowo Special Education (C.A.S.E.) Foundation.

    A statement by the Execution Director of C.A.S.E, Lola Olabanjo, made available to journalists in Benin City, said the two children lost their father through stroke, while their mother died of breast cancer, a double tragedy that left the children orphaned at tender ages.

    “Touched by their story, Chantel stepped in, partnered with Govera Group of Schools to secure their education.”

    She noted that the gesture is among the most significant milestones in her “Chantel 12-12-12 Vision” — an initiative to provide 12 scholarships before her 12th birthday in December.

    “Education is a light that no tragedy can put out. By supporting Greatness and Chidinma, we are helping them see beyond their loss and believe in a brighter tomorrow,” Olabanjo said.

    She promised that the C.A.S.E. Foundation will continue to champion access to education for disadvantaged children, ensuring that neither hardship nor personal loss stands in the way of learning.

    According to her, the 12-12-12 Vision represents just one of several projects in the pipeline, confirming that additional initiatives focused on child empowerment and education would be announced soon, reinforcing the commitment to ensuring that no child is left behind.
