The Ogun 1 Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, has seized various contrabands worth N1.35 billion from multiple locations in the state and handed over 2,547 parcels of Cannabis Sativa to the NDLEA, Idiroko Special Command.
The smuggled goods include 2,539 kegs of vegetable oil, 4,325 cartons of foreign spaghetti, 1,204 bags of foreign parboiled rice, 545 kegs of petrol, 13 pieces of used tyres, 50 bags of imported sugar, 2 used vehicles, among others.
Speaking during a press conference held at the command’s headquarters on Monday, the Acting Customs Area Controller, Olukayode Afeni, disclosed that the items were brought into the country illegally through creeks and border routes.
Afeni stated that the successful seizures underscored the command’s commitment to suppressing smuggling and removing illicit goods from the market.
He noted that the Cannabis Sativa handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) included 2,055 pieces of coconut-sized parcels (710 kg) and 15 pieces of bread-sized parcels (381 kg).
In his words: “Officers of the command, on precise intelligence patrol around Agbaraaxis on 11th March 2026, successfully intercepted a truck with registration number APP-740-YD. Upon inspection, the vehicle was found to be conveying 2,539 kegs of vegetable oil at 25 litres each.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the items were smuggled through the creeks in trickles. Full investigation is underway. This significant seizure followed an earlier operation on 4th March 2026, where the command intercepted a Sino truck loaded with 4,325 cartons of foreign spaghetti (10 kg each), highlighting a persistent trend in the smuggling of essential commodities.
“I want to assure the general public that the command, with the full backing of the CGC, Adewale Adeniyi, PhD, MFR, will do all it takes to ensure that the smuggling of vegetable oil and other prohibited items is suppressed and, in due course, eradicated, as the command is strategically positioned to decisively truncate those with malicious intentions.”
“Other seizures recorded within the period under review include: 1,204 bags of foreign parboiled rice (equivalent to two trailer loads), 2,547 parcels of Cannabis Sativa of different sizes (the Ghana loud strain commands a luxury price tag to match its heavy-hitting profile), 545 kegs of Premium Motor Spirit (13,625 litres), equivalent to a tanker load of PMS.
“Four live pangolins, which have been handed over to Green Fingers Wildlife Conservation, 36 cartons of Bardinet syrup, 8 packs of perfume oil, 13 pieces of used tyres, 50 bags of imported sugar, 8 bales of second-hand clothing, 15 sacks of used clothing, 5 sacks of used ladies’ handbags, 2 sacks of used footwear, 2 used vehicles, and 2 pieces of antiquities.
“The total duty paid is N1,350,751,000 (One billion, three hundred and fifty million, seven hundred and fifty-one thousand naira only).”
He disclosed that, in a bid to preserve cultural heritage, two antiquities were transferred to the Curator of the National Museum and Baptist Girls’ College, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta.
