Urges Nigerian leaders to emulate Bishop Crowther

The Labour Party (LP) Presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has, again, urged South-East governors to collaborate, insisting that such unity is crucial for the region’s development.

Obi spoke at the Jesuit College, Port Harcourt, while responding to a question seeking clarification on his previous call for the South-East governors to work together.

A statement by the spokesperson of the Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR), Yunusa Tanko, quoted Obi to have said that the entire country faces diverse challenges, including the South-East.

He expressed his desire for all regions to work collectively for the progress of their respective areas, thereby contributing to the overall development of Nigeria.

ALSO, Obi called on Nigerians leaders, especially political actors, to emulate the sacrificial life of Bishop Samuel Ajayi Crowther, the slave boy who became the World’s First Black Bishop between 1864 and 1891.

He spoke on the occasion of the 160th Anniversary of the Consecration of Crowther as a Bishop of Church of England on the West Africa Territories beyond the British Territorial Community named the Niger Territories (Niger Area), now Diocese on the Niger, inauguration of the Triangle and unveiling of his status at All Saints Anglican Church, Onitsha, Anambra State at the weekend.

The former governor, who spoke on the sideline of the anniversary, described Bishop Crowther as a wonderful missionary, who impacted greatly on the spread of Christianity across West Africa.

He contended that the sacrificial life, energy and time the Bishop lived should be emulated, notwithstanding the hardship, stressing: “We should learn to sacrifice.”

In his remarks, the Primate of Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, Henry Ndukuba said that Bishop Crowther’s impactful life of evangelisation, as well as the social, educational and cultural advancement are evidences that God destined him for greatness, adding that Onitsha remains central in Crowther’s life and history.
